Are they any use or just a gimmick?

Thanks

I have one and, when it is useful, it is great. But, that's not very often. With a long lens it can help throw the flash a sensible distance but you have to watch for not making it too bright.

It also needs careful alignment as it narrows the beam. I use a flash bracket to hold it away to reduce red eye and still provide accurate direction.

Thanks Paul, I`m tinkering with using one on something I need to capture, the moment will be short and the animal very quick, would an extender be of no use then?

I hate using flash on animals and birds, but may have no option.

Thinking either my 300 F4 or the big siggy.

If you mount the flash to the camera or on a bracket it should be fine. You certainly need to be ready with it as it is a bit fiddly.

I used it in Kenya in January on a leopard, I'll see if I can dig out some pics.

or perhaps you may "prefer to wait for the right time to get them in the right light rather than introduce false light"

or, if you know where the subject is going to be, place the flash closer to the spot and fire the flash remotely using the pop up flash on the camera......

Thought about it, not done it, huge difference.

If you want to take me on verbally, please be right...........

you go on about flash with the kingfisher and how you won't use on wild animals, read the third post in this topic. i ain't wise and you aint gotta be to see that.

Well, Mr expert, is there anything here that said I had done this, or that I was merely considering it?

Please have a PM conflab with the "others" and let me know the outcome.

Yours in anticipation..........

no just the fact that your considering it is good enough for me and probably most others and i aint a MR EXPERT

Tinkering with the idea means that I was considering it, not that I did nor would do it. Do you need a hammer and chisel to get that?

Were you quoted as Mr Expert?

The initial thought was there, which is enough to raise suspicions when you quite clearly have very strong views against the practice.....fair enough?

Anything to lighten atmosphere...it's gotten a bit tense! Think this thread should close now..

Hard words across a keyboard from 200 miles away.............:D

i know what i would do with a hammer

Sorry? Would you like to explain?

PS. My hammer's bigger :D
