Be aware that Sandisk cruzers forcibly install unwanted software and startup progs to every pc that you insert it in. So you may have trouble using them on your work pcs. And because it tries to force a fixed drive letter, if you already have that letter allocated the pc will not recognise the cruzer. Sandisk do little to advertise the fact that there is an uninstall option on the cruzer to remove the software (and also give you back unusable space that you have paid for). They do even less to advise you that this removal tool sometimes fails, and that you can download a different removal tool from their web site, which will work. Then it becomes the normal usb stick that they should have sold you in the first place.

Or just format it ?????

You can go onto the Sandisk website and download software to uninstall the U3 program held on the Cruzer stick.

Formatting the drive does work, I use quite a number of these all the time and are formatted for Mac use, and 1 or 2 are reformatted in FAT for use in both Pc and Mac.

Sorry, I still disagree. That may be your experience, but not mine, a learned work colleague, and a number of people found through googling sandisk cruzer formatting. I tried regular formatting, and a couple of dedicated disc partitioning utilities. Whilst they all appear to format the cruzers, a hidden partition remains untouched and you lose some space, and it can still cause problems. If formatting works, why would so many people wanting a fix be found by google? And why would Sandisk have to provide a removal utility if simple formatting worked?

Use linux, problem solved :)

On a more serious note, on windows, if you hold the shift button when you insert a drive or disk, it will stop the auto-run from starting.
Then you can partition the drive (have to unlock the hidden partition first) and remove the software installer.
If the software has already installed, then you would need to use the sandisk uninstall. If it isn't installed, then you won't need to.
Just because a load of sheep are googling for a solution, it doesn't mean that an easy one doesn't exist.

Got to agree with MisterE here. I have 4-5 of the Cruzer 4GB drives (not Micro) and everyone had been formatted but still with the U3 software. It's not really a problem as the uninstall software has always worked for me and then requires a reformat.

Great drives, forget about the U3 software and it's perfect.
