I just thought I'd ask first before sending snotty email;

I bought a new 'super fast' CF card from amazon which said 16GB and indeed the card is labelled as such

so as normal I formatted it 'in-camera' as per the manual.

the camera now says I only have 7.4GB on my card - ie exactly the same as my old 8GB card.

my question is - could the camera have formatted it to be only 8GB somehow? The format process doesn't give me any options, just format Y/N

thanks in advance

Have you tried formatting it via windows? As some cameras have a limit on what size cards they can take-so doing this would rule the camera out.

What body is it in and will it support larger than 8gb cards ?

Have you checked the capacity on a pc ?

If your body will support more than 8gb and this is all its showing on the camera and maybe pc, then I'd be asking them why and sending it back ?

Just researched a bit-looks like the 400d should be able to handle it, but format the card in Windows anyway-just to try. You may even have a duff or dodgy card - as there are a lot of fakes out there.

ok, will try the PC :)

edit: yep only 7G on the PC too - looks like an email is in order

thanks guys

Probably sold an 8GB card calculated in decimal rather than binary. 8,000,000,000 bytes will come to 7.45GB decimal (as oppose to 8 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024 bytes).

I had the same issue with 16GB Kingston bought from MyMemory - did you get to the bottom of this?

Mystery solved - not an issue with the card but with Canon's firmware, I formatted using the 5D v1.1.0 - v1.1.1 fixes this and I'm updating as I write.

I also saw in Windows an unallocated partition of a further 8GB - if the camera cannot format it to the full amount I'll pop back on here and explain how to fix for others.

EDIT - Yep, formatted in camera fine :) PHEW!
