Like any purchase you make...it depends...on what you want to achieve, and on how much you can afford.
I just got the 430EXII and it's a great flash, more than adequate for what I need. I don't need a master/slave unit. The 430II is a very capable and powerful flash.
If cash is burning a hole in your pocket get the most expensive, but unless you need the specific functions offered by the 580II get the cheaper one. You'll save £££'s.
If, in the future you need more advanced flash, you can get the 580II and you'll still be able to use the 430II as a slave unit.

When i got my flash, i was going to get the 430, but Because of the cahback offer, and kerso's very low price, paying a bit more for me to get the 580 was good.
Don't know whether it's worth getting the 580 over the 430, as i don't use it overly often, but it's with me whenever i have my camera bag, but it's been used to get the type of shots that wou;d have been impossable without.
