Flash book?

Hi,

I've got a 430EX II, but I don't use it nearly enough, because I'm not really sure how to get the most from it. Are there any books/guides that are good for learning how to use a flash effectively? I've currently only used it on camera, so want to learn more about that, but also about moving onto off-camera (wired) use.

I'm sorry if this question has been asked a million times; if there are previous threads dealing with this, please point me at 'em! ;)

Thanks for that. Having had a quick flick, it looks like it's concerned with off camera lighting? that's great, and I'll stick it in my favourites. Now, are there any books/sites which concern themselves with flash of the on-cam variety?

Cheers

;)

On-camera flash is the work of the devil :nono::lol: but if you insist, this is probably what you're after...

Work of the devil eh? Well, I am the God of Hellfire, so that's alright then

OK thanks. I've seen that brand of guides for numerous cameras and have always thought they look like glorified OEM user manuals ;) Did you actually find it useful? Does it explain the general principals of flash usage, as opposed to just how Speedlites work?

Thanks

I've never bought one of those guides for flash photography, I did buy one for my D80 and it seemed to be 90% about how to take photographs, rather than about that specific camera, which is why I thought the speedlite version might be a good one for you as it will cover the basics plus a bit about your flashgun.

Well I'll certainly go to a bookshop and check it out. I guess I was hoping for a flash equivalent to "Understanding Exposure"

I think my doctor has one marked "Understanding Flash", may not be the same thing though :suspect:

The best flash book I've ever read is 'Light-Science and Magic: an Introduction to Photographic Lighting' though I'd still recommend going the strobist route and using off camera flash. The strobist DVD set is very, very good.

I really like "The Moment It Clicks" by Joe McNally, very highly rated book although it may be too concerned with off-camera flash for your liking. It's a worthy edition to any library for the photos alone, there's a lot of cracking shots in there. He's also got another book out now called "Hot Shoe Diaries" which is supposed to be good too.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll check out each recommendation and see what suits. Any more advice is always welcome!

"On camera flash" by Neil van Niekerk is a new book out which is OK. His website and blog are probably as useful though, and the pictures on the web are way better than those in the book:

McNally's books are good too but he shoots Nikon and there are apparently big differences between systems (but not necessarily techniques).

I also like Lovegrove's work (his DVDs in particular are very good):
