Yes
I have a 5d mk iii. I need a flash mainly for fill light of portraits in contrasty conditions. I think it would also be good if the flash could also be used remotely (wirelessly) occasionally.

I'm only an amateur and it'll only be used for family orientated photos.

What would be the best flash to go for? I'm happy to spend money to get a decent one I just don't want to blow loads on something that'll have a million settings I won't use.

Any help would be greatly received.

:)

+1 for Yongnuo gear. Although I'm not sure if the RF-603 triggers will work with canon models such as the mk3 and 6D ect... maybe someone could confirm?

I have a YN560 II and use Yongnou RF-603C triggers with my Canon EOS 1000D.

They do - and according to the official Yongnuo store, you'll need the C3 version.

My Cactus v4's are well and truly gone now, so I think I'm going to go with these now.

They look good and a great price. I guess my next question is someone who is new to using flash will I get on with them considering they don't have TTL? Is it better to learn how to manually use a flash rather than dive into a TTL setup?

Don't know, but I'm always in manual mode anyway, so... :D

If you need to put your flash on top of your camera and bounce it off whatever is available, in changing environments, TTL is almost essential.

As soon as you put it in a static spot and shoot in a controlled manner, manual is as quick and more efficient.

Thanks. I think I might have to go for a canon EX model but forgo the off camera abilities for now

Which camera are you using?

For the price of a Canon flash, you could get a YN ETTL flash and a pair of YN 622 ETTL capable triggers. It's s great easy route into off camera flash.

Perfect flash for a bit of fill-in is Canon 270EXII - if portability is important. Great little gun, more powerful than the spec suggests (if you check angle of coverage) and it also has high-speed sync - which you'll need outside. It can also do basic ceiling bounce.

I use one a lot for simple stuff at fairly close range. It's fine for that, though because it's often working quite hard, recycle times can get a bit tardy.

Then partner that with something a bit bigger for off-camera stuff. 430EXII perhaps, or the Yongnuo set up that Phil suggests. Smart money is on a couple of YN 568 guns with 622 triggers - unbeatable value.
