I picked up a second hand 400mm 2.8 a couple of months back and for the most part I've been very pleased with the results, apart from one issue which has cropped up to varying degrees in every match, but showed up big time yesterday at Twickenham.

The following is at 100%:

Anyone experienced this before? Really worried I've picked up a dud lens. Doesn't always happen mind, mostly occurs when there's white or a light shade.

I had the exact same problem (probably more severe) with a Sigma 70-200 2.8 a year or so ago. As you said, mostly occurring on whites. It was indeed faulty and I managed to get a refund for it.

I'll try and find some images I've got with the lens.

Unlikely to be able to get a refund on an ebay purchase and in any case I need the lens :(

Any idea if Nikon be able to repair? Might have to give them a ring tomorrow

That looks terrible Patrick, never had a problem with mine like that (fingers crossed) hope you get it sorted

I had a lens worse than that but only in low light with high ISO. In sunlight was perfect. In the end I just p/e for a different lens.

Fixation are totally stumped with how to fix it, they compared it with another identical 400mm model and the difference in overall quality was huge, so it's not just the fringing. To say I'm gutted would be an understatement, but they're sending it off to Nikon to see if there's anything they can do.

That'll teach me to buy third-hand.

eBay :-( I know, stupid me. Obviously excellent rating etc but still. The buyer said he may be keen to buy it off me again but we'll see. I've picked it up from Fixation for the weekend as I've got two matches to cover, taking it back again on Tues.
