what do people use as a flag to stick to a speedlight, if got an idea for a shot where i light up the background with some gelled flash's and i want to flag the key light to stop any light from it spilling onto my background and effecting the colours...is it a case of just using a bit of thickish black card stuck to the side of the flash or is there a proper alternative

That will do fine. Even better though is Cinefoil (brand name) or Blackwrap (same thing but unbranded) which is basically super-thick matt black cooking foil that can be cut and bent to shape easily.

Blackwrap and BluTack is what I used with speedlights. Very easy, dead cheap, and can be positioned very accurately if needs be.

I've even used several parallel and overlapping strips of Gaffer tape in a pinch. Black construction paper, black foam core and a piece of tape also works. Rotating the speedlite head is another, sometimes very useful option to get the most light out of it possible yet not hit something objectionable. It's time to be creative. Use whatever is available that will work.

A white paper napkin loosely taped over a speedlite lens in a U shape makes a great GOBO to spread the light from the speedlite, when you need wider light too. Again, use what is available if you don't have the fancy stuff with you. I always carry Gaffer tape.

i've just bought some reolink cctv cameras with solar panels...the solar panels are protected in the box by a sheet of thin but firm foam sheet,,,it make's an excellent flag to stick to the side of my speedlight, one either side and a bit of a bend and it becomes a snoot...perfect
