Hi,I,ve just inherited a nikon D5100,i have a couple of lenses with it,the one I favour is the 55-300,my question is would this lens be suitable to capture scenery at the fjords? If not which lens would you recommend

Hi and welcome to TP

None too sure as I have not been on Fjords cruise but IMO it is good idea to have something in the 8-25mm range and such majestic scenery needs a wider view to encompass the vista.

The lens you mention would be good to isolate subjects within the wider landscape area.

I hope you have a wonderful trip and get some great images of them.

Hi many thanks for the reply and the welcome,
The other lenses I have are a 28-80 and a 18-55,doesn't mean a lot to me but I think I need to do some experimenting before I head off to the fjords, also planning to take a drone across with authorisation so it's going to be a fun trip

Are those focal lengths the full frame equivalent..? If so, I think that might be more suitable than you might expect. I went there last year but only took a Sony RX100 vii, which has maximum full frame equivalent of 200mm but often wasn't long enough for me to get in as close as I'd have liked on the points of interest. It was fine mostly and did get some closer shots but an extra 100mm would have been useful at times. Of course the 55mm end might not be wide enough for some shots when you're off the ship but your phone might cover the wider end for you. If you use the search box you should be able to find a couple of my threads to check the typical focal lengths I used.
Edit: The Sony has a crop factor of 2.7 so you'll have to multiply the focal lengths that Flickr quotes by that.

The 18-55 is a wider angle lens giving you a wider field of view. I would experiment between that and the 55-300 to understand field of view and how they will differently capture the landscapes you will see.

I am guessing the 28-80 is a full frame screw drive lens and will be manual focus on your camera. The 18-55 AF-S APSC lens and will have autofocus on a D5100. The 28-80 might be a bit sharper but will be slower to use.

If you want something a wider than I'd suggest a used Tokina 12-28 f/4 as good value lens.

maybe this will give some idea. I would strongly recommend you use a camcorder. zooming in smoothly I would say is a must be able to do. Done the Fjords twice and would love to go again

also take a trip up into the mountains while doing this trip, a camera can't do the fjords justice. the scerenry will knock you sideways

I also took a Nikon 70-200mm lens and a 24-70mm lens.

Norway and the fjords are a photographers dream. You could easily take 1000 photos and still only covered a bit . I was a bit dissapointed with the Flam railway to be honest, but one of those must go on to say you done it. We did did see the glacier Briksdale Glacier and it is a long walk so recommend jumping into on of thesebuggy.JPG
my wife and I have been to so many countries but Norway beats them all. Guess I have fallen in love with Norway ,I would go back time after time if financies allowedaaa.JPG
