Morning folks! Chris the forum Noob here!

Been wanting to get into photography for a while now, but I'm stumbling at the first hurdle. What fricken camera do I purchase!!

I considered a DSLR but then I felt that that's diving in the deep end for someone who's only ever fiddled with a compact he bought in duty free four years ago. So I eventually stumbled across the Sony DSC-HX1. But I'm still stuck. Will this let me fiddle with settings manually so I can try new things. I don't want another camera with auto settings.

Any suggestions for a beginner with a few hundred to spend?!?

Chris

Welcome to the site and would advise you to spend your cash on a DSLR, either Nikon or Canon.

Read up on the manual and then just ask if you get stuck.

Was wandering around Fittie at the weekend, fella building a full-size plane in his shed there!

Cool, when I first looked into the weapon I'd like I looked at the Nikon D40. How does that perform as a camera for beginners?

Building a plane? In his shed?! Christ the houses at Fittie aren't that big, let alone the sheds!

Thanks folks. Been on a few forums...this is the only one where people have actually replied to my "hey folks" message! ha. I feels accepted. ha ha

ok i'm Nikon but...................

D40 with 18-55 DX GII lens is a good start
18-55 with VR is better, but not necessary on the shorter focal lengths
then add 55-200 VR ...... 70-300 VR if you have the money

good basic set-up to start, all of which easily sold later
when your experience will lead you to your upgrade model choice

BTW - up from the D40 I went to D5000.....an excellent model £500 new with 18-55 DX GII kit lens

both these Nikons have to have AF-S lens - meaning the focusing motor is IN the lens not in the body like the older D200 or newer D90 that I did consider too

if you have a budget - dont forget memory cards, bag, tripod et al.......

yo bro, im new here to and also from aberdeen. Ive just started in the world of photography too. didnt have a clue. went in head first at jessops and picked up a sony alpha. im pleased with it altho i did find a slightly upgraded model for cheaper on comets website

Hi Chris

Welcome to TP

D40 (as mentioned) is decent start - If it's Nikon you're after - D50 (if you can find a used one) will give you Autofocus in the body which will widen your lens options.

Only got a Nikon 8800 bridge camera, rest of my stuff is Canon so can't help you much there.

My mate as a D80 and is very happy with it.

You're not wrong about the size of the houses, however this fella has been building it for 7 years and it's nearly done...........

Nice...I've been looking for something to do when i'm home. I like the darker, more gothic side to life. Not black fingernails etc but i'll be hovering about the old churches and graveyards etc.

What do you photograph?

Well I fancied the point and shoot DSC-HX1. I just needed someone who knew what they were talking about to tell me no! Get an SLR! ha.

Books on order too!

nothing as of yet. only got a few snaps around the house. i was unlucky as i just bought my camera and was called offshore.
since then ive spent a **** load on lenses and accessories off T'internet. cant wait to get home and have a fart about. dont know where to start
ive been looking to see if theres any courses or workshops givin the basics as i think id find it alot easier than me just reading a book, which i have, but there dont seem to be much in aberdeen.
i might get in touch with the college to see if they have anything.

Kevin
if you have internet access offshore - read through some of the Tutorials here..?

D40-- this is great also as a second body .I gave mine to to my daughter she should have taken my D70.
The D40 will Take you a long way into photography So while offshore take the advice & read up on tutorials here
Good luck!

Yeah i'm the same. Called offshore before i could review what pics i've taken. Perfect eh!? I've been looking at lenses too. Didn't quite anticipate those prices i must say!

I was thinking the same. Speak to the college or see that club just of George street. But once i'm done working i'll have a few days here to flick through the tutorials.

Hi Scottish snapper, I have a Sony HX1, but now it is doing nothing but gathering dust because I went and got myself a DSLR (Nikon D5000). I think you made the right choice to go for a DSLR.

Welcome Chris ,
I 'm another relative nooby , but I went down the canon route . You are right about price of lenses , every upgrade is another wedge cash but at least they hold their value esp if you check out the classifieds here
Maybe catch up at one of the aberdeen meets
David
