Clearing out my dad's stuff, I stumbled across a 28-page Fishwick's catalogue from 1982. Apart from the hilarious staff photos, it's quite interesting reading. Aside from any copyright issues, which I suspect are long gone, anyone interested in me scanning and posting? The price comparisons are interesting v. today's digital technology e.g. Nikon F3, body only £320.

Almost spot on, and the index is x2. 60 since. 1982...

the index seems quite low

I've got some old copies of a weekly camera magazine and the cover price was

1975, 1977 & 1978 25p

1985 65p

1986 70p

current issue £2.65

In 1978, a Canon AE1 with 50mm f1.8 lens was £200 or 800 times the cover price.

Today a Canon EOS60D plus 18-55mm lens is £850 or 320 times the cover price.

If someone can explain how to attach a pdf, I have it scanned, for amusement value only.

Fishwick's, that's a name that brings back memories. I used to order lots of stuff from them and they were quick and reliable. Then suddenly things changed. Items were never seemed to be in stock, deliveries were late etc. Not long afterwards they became extinct

Fishwick's, indeed a blast from the past, they used to do all sorts of small hard to find items.

I think they also used to sell fishing gear as well.

They certainly did. I used to live about 400 yards from them and spent lots of time in the fishing section in my youth, and as has been said went downhill fast and shut down.

I recently came across a copy of Amateur Photographer from 1966 (from 2 Nov so its exactly 45 years ago today!) - cover price - 1s 6d.

Ralph if you email it to me (mbooth@gmail.com) I'll upload it for you :)

I'd certainly like a look. I've been trying to remember the name of the manufacturer of my old gadget bag from about then, was a french make (I think ) and began with a "C" (again I think, but at my age memory fails too often ). The make was very popular. No important reason for wanting to know, other than it's been bugging me!!!!!

I'd bee keen to see it also :) purely for comparisons and maybe a cheap laugh too :D

I used to buy photo paper from them in the 'good old days'.

Anthony.

The only camera bags they seemed to list at that time and in that catalogue are "tenba" bags. Look out soon for the upload!

there were Cullmann bags from that period, but I thought they were a German comapny.

Thanks chaps, but it was neither Tenba or Cullmann, but I appreciate the thought.

I look forward to seeing the Fishwick's listing anyway.

Seems to be more 'big items' than I remember. Maybe they did another catalogue of small items or maybe they did those earlier.

Or maybe my memory is not what it was ... :shake:

Thanks Marcel. Apologies for the photocopying quality, the catalogue was slightly larger than A4!

would that be fishwicks in haydock
i guess the nearest thing now is calumet
but still not as exciting as fishwicks were

Interesting - Zuiko lenses seem to be the same prices today!

Interesting read. Sad to see so many of the manufacturers in the catalogue are no longer with us.

An interesting blast from the past. Not the info. I wanted on camera bag, but good to see the old gear, reminded me I used to own a Pentax 110, shame I lost it in Germany!

Thanks Ralph (& Marcel)

Welcome. It was the year of the Falklands and the 20p piece and, judging by the catalogue, some bad hair in St Helens! I always find it surprising how much more we get for a our money now.

They used to sell CCS bags but they are British. They were blue and well padded, I still have few of them around!

I have fond memories of going for a trip to Fishwicks with my dad as a young girl, I remember going to Haydock Park racecourse for a photographic show I think they ran.

No it wasn't by CCS either, but thanks for the thought.

If anyone wants the catalogue, please send me a private message? Ta

That does bring back memories...

I used to have a Pentax ME Super in those days, and I still have my Hanimex Le Ronde projector up in the loft !

Steve

Bought all my first camera gear from there, first Olympus OM10 later OM2 SP, Tamron & Vivitar lenses & Fotima bag. Always enjoyed walking round the store, it was like an Alladins cave, 90% of the camera gear you couldn't afford. Thanks for posting the catalogue

Bit of an old thread but this brought so many memories back. They must have lasted some while after 1982 as im sure i got a Pentax SFX from there and they only came out in 1987. What a place to walk around and take your goods home on instant credit, the excitement, the downfall of many, including me at the time!

I was there too and bought a 'UNOMAT DP1000' slide projector from Fishwicks, it was discounted as it was a reps display model, Got it home and only used it three or four times before the bulb exploded taking the lens etc. with it.

I sent it back to Fishwicks for repair (under warranty) and while it was in their possession they went into liquidation, after a few abrupt letters and calls from myself, they (or the liquidators) replaced it with a brand new 'UNOMAT DP2000 AF' which I still have (but don't use) and a free illuminated slide sorter as an apology.
