Just wondering if anyone uses or had any usage of any of the Canon compatible fisheye lenses and just after there feedback and how they got/get on with them.

Looking at Canon 15mm f2.8 & the Sigma 15mm f2.8 there is a tokina nocking around on ebay but not too sure on them.

Cheers.

P.S. Really eyeing up the canon shame theres never any 2nd hand :(.

i havent had experience with the canon, but i own the tokina and it is a brilliant lens. it's brilliantly built and the image quality is brilliant too. (overuse of brilliant?)

the sigma im not a fan of so much, maybe because i havent had time to play with it, i didnt like the build as much as i do my tokina though.

I think the most important issue here is what kind of fisheye effect you're after.

The Canon 15mm is a diagonal fisheye, so the 180-degree field of view is only available on a full-frame diagonal. On a 40D it's wide but not spectacularly wide, and not very fishy.

The Sigma 8mm is a circular fisheye on full-frame. On a 40D you don't quite ge the full circle but it's quite satisfyingly fishy.

Then there's the Sigma 4.5mm which is a circular fisheye for crop sensors. That's very very fishy.

Overuse of the word Fishy?

Question for Stewart: What are they like on a 1.3 crop sensor? Are they slightly more fishy then on a 1.6 crop, but not as fishy as Full Frame? (This is actually a genuine question)

As Stewart said the 15mm fisheyes won't have a full fisheye effect on a 40D, if you want the diagonal fisheye I'd advise you go for the 10mm Sigma, or the 10-17mm Tokina...

I have the 10-17 Tokina and loved the effect on my 10 & 20d, with the 5d at 10mm you get a keyhole effect, and I hav'nt tried it yet on either my 1d11n or 1d111 as I use these for primarily wildlife shots and the lenses stay on.

I was amazed at the sharpness of the Tokina, and have been well pleased with it:thumbs: I don't use it much and it's the only non Canon L glass I have so for me to keep it I must enjoy using it:thumbs:

I often se it mentioned on here and other fora but never see any results:shrug::thumbs:

Yes.

The Canon 15mm won't be quite 180 degrees on a 1.3 crop, but it will be closer than on a 1.6 crop.

I don't know whether you'll get a complete circular image from the Sigma 8mm. If you don't, you'll at least get more of it than on a 1.6 crop sensor, ie the truncation of the edges of the circle will be less severe.

I don't know whether the Sigma 4.5mm will fit on a 1D. If it does, you'll get a circular image the same size as a 1.6 crop sensor, with a big black border around it.

Tokina 10-17mm <<< Looking at that one it hasn't quite got the low fstop of the canon was my only cocern, I am but a humble newbi so It might not matter but i always go for the lowest fstop i can get for DOF and speed as I mostly shoot sport.

Main reason for wanting the fishey is for the wideness the widest lens i have is my 17-50 which I like but was hopeing to get a bit more out of the 15mm

Little example not the best but kinda what im after

Was taken with my 40D and 17-50 at 17mm

That's because it's such a good piece of kit (IMO). Really sharp, although the lens cap is not exactly the answer to a maiden's prayers.

:agree:
I hired one for a couple of weeks and was very impressed with the Canon  Have you thought about hiring one for a couple of days to try out?

I've got a Zenitar 16mm fisheye for occasional playing with on my 10D. Maybe not as fishy as some but for the cost a great lens to have a play with. Also offers a great FOV as a wide lens if de-fished. I find mine very sharp and easily focussed .

One for sale here (nothing to do with me BTW)

I think you would be cool with a wide angle for landboarding. Although you should tell your mate to get rid of the Waroo.... Flying penile best kites are no good bro :p

you can pick up tokinas very cheap on ebay, that's where i got mine from. unfortunately i chose a bad store to order mine from so it took about 3 weeks to get here, but when it got here it was so worth it. especially for how much i got it for!

For a crop body you might look at the Sigma 10mm f/2.8 Fisheye. I have one on order at the moment, following a live demo "wedding shoot" at the SWPP Convention in January. There are a couple of examples from the lens in this thread....

If you want to see other fishy examples for Canon, see what else there is in the lens archive thread here....
