I have some money to spend on a lens for my d90 do people think I should go for an extreme wide angle or a fish eye thanks

A fisheye, something like the Nikon 10.5mm is a wonderful piece of kit - it can make the mundane look amazing - but it's easy to loose the novelty value quickly because it does one thing.

Wideangles are probably more versatile for everyday use and because they don't distort the image so dramatically they do retain a sense if 'reality' for landscape work.

I'd be lost without my fisheye for magazine work where I need an impact shot, but use it everyday? My 14mm and my 17-55 win hands down....

I agree with Specialman. I have a FF fisheye, which is used for special assignments . It's not an everyday lens. A good wide angle would be I think a better purchase. The fisheye effect can get very repeatative very quickly

I agree, fisheye is great but not an everyday lens. Wide angle is more versatile if you can only get one or the other.

Fisheyes can be great to spice up a set of photos, but as said a wide angle is generally more useful.

I love my 10.5mm Nikon fish, but it is the least used lens I own.

If I had to choose, I would keep the wide angle. I do use the fisheye a fair bit but the UWA gets more use.

I have a fish eye & UWA, used the fish eye at first then the novelety wore off, allways use the UWA

Unless you've a very specific need for a fish eye, you'll find the UWA much more useful.
My Tokina 11-16mm is possibly my favourite lens!

I would agree with the general consensus, my Tokina 11-16mm is my favourite lens.

Just make sure you do lots of research, there are a few not so great WA zooms out there. Highly recommend the Tokina!

:agree: :plusone:

I do not own a UWA but it is next on my list of purchases. I do have a 8mm fisheye and use it regularly. I do not think in anyway the novelty has worn off as I use it for architectural shots. It allows me very unique perspectives and a 180 degree field of view.

It depends on your planned use for it, but I certainly value the shots I get with mine. You must remember the subject matter, no point shooting a portrait with one but for architectural shots it lends itself IMO very well.

Thanks for the advice everyone, it was kind of how I was thinking so great to be confirmed.

Do you think the Nikon wide angle is the best to get? That is the Nikkor AF-S DX 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED.

YES!

I sold my 16mm fisheye to help finance the 14-24mm - which I use a lot - still miss the fish though - I'm thinking of getting another one.

It depends what other lenses you have and what sort of pictures you want to take. I sold my Sigma 10-20 as I found my 16-85 was wide enough for most 'normal' shots, and I prefer the fisheye 10.5 for super-wide stuff - it is a lot of fun. I sometimes use the Hugin de-fishing PS plug-in which straightens verticals but not horizontals.
