Fish and a portion of chip is a...........

See thats the thing, its having a soggy sauce and a crispy batter that doesn't mix...mind you, if your chippy is good and will wrap fish seperately, you can have anything with the chips :D

Also agree that chip shop salt and vinegar IS different! Even you buy theirs and put it on later, its NOT the same. Chippy fish btw, HAS to have salt and vinegar, even if on every other occasion, you put lemon on your fish. FACT! :D

But when we get curry sauce it comes in a separate pot so you pour it on the side of the plate. No soggy batter, simples! :D

Oh, and yuck to vinegar. Lemon juice FTW.

That is dead right, but make sure they put the vinegar on first.
If the salt goes on first the vinegar then washes it off.

Thats true!! Like when putting lemon and pepper on your smoked salmon, lemon has to be first, took me months to teach that to the staff at the sandwich shop round the corner from work

Ooh, rich comig from a self confessed Landoner! :p

Agree about the lemon and pepper on the smoked salmon though. ;)

Also get:-
Chicken supper
sausage supper
pie supper, and
black puding supper!

Yep, we have those in Cumbria.
There is a chip shop in Whitehaven which has the best fish and chips! I remember going there as a young lad with my Dad to get them as well as one of those hideous looking brightly coloured drinks where you popped the top with a straw.

They're an urban myth, deep-fried pizza on the other hand.....
Cheese and mushroom pizza, folded - battered - fried....... served with chips...... mmmmmmm heart attack supper!

[/off topic]

Fish supper round our way. Only one shop offers choice of haddock or cod, all the rest say "it's fish son, just fish."

Does anyone else love salad cream on fish and chips (plus salt and vinegar of course)? .. I do, and yes i am being serious

Oh yes, bring on the salad cream:love:

There are definitely some heathens posting on this thread :D
Fish and Chips is the "order" with the Fish being specified
Mushy peas are a :nono:
as is gravy
and curry sauce WTF is that all about?

Salt and vinegar at source is a must
or if not Tom sauce (Daddies, if you can get it) over the lot when at home with a slice of bread and butter Mmmmmmmm
Salad cream Heinz that is on the chippingtons
but another :nono: on the battered fishypoo

Or if I am really hungry I'll order a fish and a firkin
( thats a piece of rock and a firkin great pile of chips, to yoo's lot :D)

And there you have, it a complete heart attack in "yesterdays news"

And yes it must be eaten out of the paper there is no other way to eat them ;)
As a final WTF, WTF is it with these poylestyrene trays these days?
Chish and fips tastes, well tasteless, like that :(
( plus you just can't suck the juice out of them like the good ole newspapers ;))

So basically, on examination of replies so far, it seems that 'fish supper' is a Scottish thing, the rest of the country asks for fish n chips [usually with fish specification included] which is much more logical :p

FTR, mushy peas is very acceptable with a fish, tub of curry sauce for chip dipping is borderline, and gravy a definate no-no if fish on the plate. Without the fish though, anything goes :D Pour me some more gavy on there lad!

scallops [pronounced scollop] are definately potato in batter, and luverly
scallops [pronounced sc-a-lops] are strange slimy shell fish reserved for fishaholics and other oddity people :D

yep...i agree, except a slice of potato in batter is called a fritter in s.wales

oh,and don't get me started on the dungeness cod and chips

Polystyrene trays are really bad :gag: but even worse are the plastic bags they put them in :shake: Even when the F&C are wrapped in paper they just sweat so much ....:bonk: They should use paper bags or none at all

Just go in and ask for a Portion of Fish and Chips.

Fish and Chips here, Although in a town not far away there is "a Split" which is something like Fish and Pea's...

No they're not - I was in glasgow and this chippy was selling battered twixes to cadbury creme eggs! Also battered mince and onion pies..

As for the fish supper thing, when I was working in NI I couldn't get used to the phrase 'fish and chip' - when I first heard it I was expecting a portion of fish and a fried jacket potato

At the moment I'm working down Basingstoke and both times I have asked for Fish, Chips and Gravy. They look at me like I'm bloody stupid and the 2nd looked like she was also considering phoning the police. :D

I asked about it at work and my colleagues mentioned that asking for Gravy was unheard of.

Always reminds me of the Peter Kay quote - Has tha owt moist ??? :D

well there's always gonna be peeps that can eat porridge sandwiches or chicken in blancmange..
I gotta say though, fish and gravy just ain't happening.....ever..:shake:

Normal night it is "Fish n Chips".

Friday night it tends to be " Fizzzzhandchzipzzzzzzzzpeas".

My local I ask for a job lot. this being large fish, jumbo sausage , burger, corndbeef patty, pineapple ring, onion rings, large chips with scrapings and either mushy peas or beans.

Apparently I am the only one who does though.

as an after thought why are most things a large but a sausage is a jumbo?

Little Chefs used to do Olympic Breakfasts. Used to need a kip in the car after one of those.

How did you manage to stuff one of those job lots away?

Must be because there's never anything left for anyone else!

Come to think of it, I thought the only people who asked for a 'Fish Supper' only exist in annual comics such as 'The Broon's and 'Our Wullie'

Ah the memories, I wonder if they still make them.
