Hello all :)

I've had my 40D for a few years now and have mostly just used my trusty 50mm f1.8 over that time.

I've been thinking about getting a zoom for a while, and now I've been asked to take pics at an indoor pre-wedding event for a friend - it's likely to be pretty crowded and possibly tight on space so the 50mm won't cut it in terms of getting the wider shots. Rather than get a wide prime, is there a zoom that I can buy that will cover the wide angle side of things but also be useful for general purpose?

I'm possibly looking to upgrade to full frame in a year or so, so would prefer a compatible lens. My budget is around £700-£800.

From recent experience I don't think 24-70 on a crop body is going to be very wide in a crowded small area. I was using a 24-105mm on a 7D.

I would have said EF-S 17-55 but you can't use it on full frame, so it's a choice between what you want/need now v future plans. :-)

EF 16-35MM II looks very nice but slightly outside your stated budget.

Defintately, without a shadow of a doubt, buy the Canon EFS 17-55 f/2.8 IS. And there's no way the 24-70mm would be wide enough for what you need.

The EFS 17-55 is the best fast mid zoom for a Canon crop - end of.

If you go FF in the future you can sell it for more or less what you paid for it.

Just as an aside, is the Canon EF 17-40mm F4 L any good?

Thanks all for your input

It's very good but for indoor use you will be better off with a f2.8 or faster. I use a 24-105mm mostly and it's normally set to f8 outdoors taking pictures of my 4 year old twins.

I need to use a flash indoors even when it's set to f4, I don't like using very high ISO settings.
