Is the canon 400d good enough I am not charging for this event by the way

Of course it is good enough, it depends on what your/their expectations are & how good your skill & knowledge is.

These threads can be quite contentious at times so be prepared for a wide array of responses :)

Whatever kit you have will do the job but you need to know how to use it and it's limitations (if any)

What have you got available? First wedding I shot was with a 500D, 17-55 f2.8, 50mm f2.5 and a 55-250 f4, I think I made it work - the bride & groom were happy - but I rented the 17-55 & wouldn't use it again & the 55-250 was borrowed. I still use the 50mm for most shots. (used a little 270ex flash)

Do you have a flash?

For me, it's all a question of context, if the OP thinks that the camera body is the most important thing he has to be concerned about, that's a worry.

However, if the OP has the right skills, knowledge, lenses, flash technique all nailed, the camera body might be his only question mark left, then he should be fine with the 400d.

I would say though, that even if doing it for a mate as a practice, if you're the only chance they have at 'professional' photos, hire or borrow some backup gear. Having to put your hand up halfway through the day to apologise because you have a gear problem isn't good enough even if you're shooting for free - if the B&G are relying on you, you should be delivering 'something'.

In theory yes - I shot a wedding last year with two 20Ds (which i think has the same sensor and similar firmware)

However the really key thing as phil has said is what glass you have, what flash gun you have, and whether you have a second camera as back up. (400Ds are cheap on ebay these days )

Also are you shooting this as main photographer or as a guest , what your general level of experience as a photographer is like , and whether this is a one off for a mate or if you are aiming to start charging once you have a portfolio

and lastly what are the expectations of the B&G - have you had an honest conversation with them about your (lack of) experience and kit ?
