I am looking at getting my first tripod. I have a Canon 600d, and the biggest least that will go on it is the 70-300. I have no idea wether to get a ball or 3 way head, but I am snapping mostly landscape with a few portrait.

Heard Red Snapper are good without breaking the bank, but also Manfrotto. Any ideas?

Hi, my advice would be to spend around £150 to £200, seems a lot but you will regret spending anything less.

I bought 2 cheap ones and they broke very quickly.

I feel very confident with my camera on my Manfroto.

Cheers.

Not sure how the brands compare, but don't economise too much unless I can guarantee you will buy again

What you get will depend on whether you intend carrying it about a lot or within easy reach of car/other transport

You will get more stability at a cheaper price with a 3 way head, but a ballhead will probably be better for your uses and lighter too.

Loads of threads on here discussing tripods and well worth a search, I think Redsnapper give a 10% discount for TP members, but don't quote me on that

Without spending loads my choice would probably be a Manfrotto 190 or 055, if carrying is important buy the 4 section version, My daughter has a Manfrotto ballhead, 496 I think and that seems stable enough without the lens drooping when tightened

Make sure both head and tripod are of sufficient quality otherwise you are just wasting your money if one item lets the other down

Thanks guys, I was leaning towards Manfrotto...

The Manfrotto 190 XPROB More has been going for £68 on the amazon Black Friday daily lighting deals thing http://www.amazon.co.uk/deals-offer...&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=346409987&pf_rd_i=468294 - been listed twice this week and I think they are repeating the deals already run during the week on Friday and Saturday.

(If you check after midnight it usually lists the offers and times for the following day - you have to buy it at the specified time though which is a bit of a pita).

Blink and you'll miss it! You've got to be very lucky to get in at the reduced price.

True - but worth joining the waitlist as a lot of people add to basket and then don't buy it - I was 68th on the waitlist with the chance of getting one given as: 'poor' - but I still got one. :D You do have to buy it at the specified time though which may not be ideal if you are out/at work etc. None listed for today (Friday) anyway so maybe Saturday or Sunday? Kindle Fire tablet reduced to £99 until Monday as well if anyone wants one? :D

Good for you. I was somewhere down at 270+ so didn't bother so think I will go with the Red Snapper

Yep, either the 190XPro or the 055XPro would be my recommendation. Both solid tripods and both will do you well. Choose which one depending on your needs, the 190XPro is lighter and shorter folded but shorter in height too, the 055 is very heavy and bulky but goes as tall as you ever need it (and carries more weight).

Then stick something like the 804RC2 3 way or the mini/compact ball head on it.

EDIT: My other recommendation... Although heavier is better think about what you will do with the tripod. If you will be carrying it long distance then weight will be important. The best tripod is not the sturdiest, it's the one you have with you at the time. A lot of tripods can be very heavy (see the 055Pro and some of the red snappers), fine for car or studio work, more awkward for landscapes away from a road..
