I'm looking to get my first tripod, but there are so many to choose from, not to mention different heads, monopods etc, that I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed!

What would you recommend as a first tripod? I'm looking for something relatively low cost as I don't know how much use it'll get as yet, but I want something reliable enough to hold my camera safely (it's an EOS 20D) if that helps.

Cheap as possible without compromising quality. Ideally as close to £50 as possible, though I'm aware I might be asking for too much there!

Yeah I've been looking at eBay recently and have seen some ones Manfrotto and Giottos (which seem to be quite expensive usually) sometimes going secondhand for around that region, but there are so many different models of each that I'm just worried I'll end up with the wrong thing entirely! :)

Having just bought one myself, take a look at Redsnapper, there's also a 10% discount for TP members (apparently).
For the money I don't think they can be beaten.
