I'm looking to get a tripod following a purchase if a 70d a few weeks ago.

Max £100, looking for something light as would like to be able to travel with it and some light walking etc.

I'm quite tall so need a reasonable height as well.

Any suggestions?

I have seen the Redsnapper tripods and they look quite good. Maybe heaving than I was after, anything sub 1.5KG?

I've just ordered a red snapper RSF-284 tripod and an RSH-24 head, I managed to find a 10% discount code as well (PM me if you want it, I won't post it publicly).

I'll let you know what its like when I get it!

I'm another Redsnapper RSF-284 owner, I think it's very good

Light, Strong, cheap ------ pick two is often mentioned when it comes to tripod buying

No doubt RS are very good for the money, but light they ain't and think you might have to up the budget a bit if you want a tall sturdy light tripod.

Maybe one of the Manfrotto or Giottos carbon models would suit, also beware that gaining extra height using the centre column does nothing for stability.

Well my red snapper rsf-284 tripod and rsh-24 head arrived this morning. Very impressed with it at first looks, seems very sturdy and has a few nice features such as the way you attach the tripod head (The head screws on, then you turn the plate on the tripod to tighten it up, makes for a very secure connection between the tripod and the head). The head looks great for stills photography, but no good for video pan/tilts which isn't a surprise as its a stills photography head. I will be borrowing a video tripod head from uni if I decide to shoot video with camera movement.
One minor niggle is that neither the tripod or the head have a spirit level, so I've bought a hotshoe-mounted spirit level from ebay for 99p which should help in that regard. A little shame if you like to use flashes/triggers in the hotshoe but again, only a very minor annoyance for a tripod as cheap as this!
The tripod packs down very small into a great quality carry bag, the head has to be taken off to fit in the bag, but it sits just right with the head between the legs at the end of the bag and as I said before, taking the head on and off is quick and easy so its worth it for the more compact bag. The bag is easily slung crosswise over the shoulder and you barely notice its there.

Overall its well, well worth the money so far and I'm more than happy with my purchase, I don't see any problems in the future, especially with a 3 year warranty from red snapper themselves! Could these be the fabled light, strong and cheap tripods? We'll have to see.

There is a knack to get it back in the bag, but it does go in with the head attached once you work it out

I just bought the 'Manfrotto MK294A3-D3RC2 294 Aluminium Tripod Kit with 3 Way QR Head'. It's 'not too heavy' at 3kg (once you go to carbon fibre to reduce weight the price rockets), seems well made and very sturdy, and is quite high without the centre extended. Legs full out without the centre up with the camera on, the eyepiece is at my eye level, and I'm about 5 foot 8.

It was £94 on Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0049F6TI4/ref=pe_385721_37038051_pe_217191_31005151_M3T1_dp_1

i have just taken delivery of my red snapper tripod and i have to say im so glad i listened to the advice from all the good folk on here. it seems very well built and after using it today for the first time appears very stable at full extension (not the center post). my only tiny gripe is it does not come with a small instruction booklet saying how to change the long post for the short one. how to use the tripod in an inverted way or what all the spares are for. to say i am a novice is an understatement and i appreciate more knowledgeable photographers will work this out in no time at all but i am not the sharpest at the best of times so a small set of instructions would have been brilliant. i also cannot get the tripod in the bag with the head in place but i just leave it sticking out of the end of the bag. 9/10 for the red snapper i say. cheers pete

To swap the center section or to invert the pole all you do is unscrew the bottom part of it, this is a small disk on the bottom where the hook is.

i dont know what head you have but my ball head goes in and zips up fully just needs to be in the right position

thanks dave. i shall go and play now. expect lots of swearing grazed knuckles and an ad in the classies for a new tripod bag when i break this one trying to force it in with the head attached.

i went with the rsh 12 ball head. i have managed to get it in but had to take out the spare short centre column. it is on the tight side but i finally managed to do it minus any swearing.

if you look at the tripod from the end on you will see its not quite even, if the wider section is on the bottom and the part of the tri pod where the leg connects goes in the bag first it should go in quite easy, to the point i have got a few extra bits in mine also like a pair for gloves torch or two and even a small tripod for a compact.

redsnapper (sorry i forgot the guys name ) were at the tp convention in blackpool sold my wife a cracking monopod she uses it all the time would thoroughly recommend them

Hmm my ball head sticks all the way out of the bag, I can't see how I could get it in
I also can't work out how the round plate with the hex hole goes on and then the ball head on top, the threaded bolt is to short  Sorted that bit

What head have you got ?
61 ?

Edit,
The tripod with the ball head on is 60cm, the bag is 50cm long

Edit2 I had a look on their site and it says the tripod bag they sell is 750mm long but that one looks different than the one supplied in the kit, maybe they are sending out different bags

Think I need to take pictures to provee it can be done haha, are yours the 4 part legs ?

I can confirm the red snapper rsf-284 with the rsh-24 3 way head doesn't fit in with the head attached, however I can easily fit both in the bag if I detach the head and the settle it between the ends :)

Will have to wait till im back at home tonight.

You are folding the legs back over and making sure the center collum is extended ?

Red snapper all the way. Had a problem with my legs after about 18 months, but they picked them up, fixed them and sent them back all FOC.

wouldn't hesitate to use again

:suspect:Sorry you will have to show me

I keep finding little things on this tripod which makes me even more impressed, they really have thought about the design!

Today I found out that you can unscrew the top of the tripod (where the head fits on), flip over the bolt and screw it back in, and you can then mount heads which take the larger screw size! This means I can use the video heads from my uni :D

Ok here goes, excuse the lighting picture quality and background dont have much time tonight.

After you have finished using your tripod and its been dropped to this you then need to extend the middle pole back up all the way as per picture.

once done all legs need to be folded back over on them selves so they lie along the center column as below.

You may need to move the head slightly so the legs can close properly, once this is one is you look at the end of the tripod you will see the triangle doenst have equal sides.

To place in the bag make sure the opposite end to the head and feet go in first with the widest part of the triangle at the bottom. This will allow the tripod to slide in easy and then for the bag to zip up easily without and trouble with room to spare like in the pictures below.
