On a whim I bought a Fujica STX-1N with a 50mm at a car boot sale yesterday for no other reason than I thought it looked class. :D Even though I haven't used a film camera since Jesus was a wee lad.

Anyway I prob won't get a chance to use it until the weekend but I thought it be sensible to ask for some hints and tips before hand. I managed to get the hold of a manual for it online so am happy enough in terms of controls etc.

In terms of getting the film processed onto disc is there a major difference between the walk in places, in terms of I.Q?

Any help appreciated.

Cheers Tommy.

Aha another person making steps into the right side of life! Welcome aboard, Tommy.

The consensus seems to be that the variation between individual walk-in places is greater than the consistent difference between them as "brands". This isn't really helpful, other than telling you to start with the cheapest and keep trying. Use cheap film for testing (eg Agfa Vista or the cheap Kodak from Poundland, you can guess the cost). Some of the big Asda and Tesco stores still have really cheap labs; the last Asda I used cost £2 per film plus £1 to put the scans on CD (no prints). The local Max Spielmann charges £5 per film for process and scan, and does a reasonable job. Then as you get more into it, there's a sticky at the top on the professional mail-order labs.

Do share some results on the "Show us your film shots" thread. And have fun!

Hello Tommy.....I don't know how things are in NI, but if possible go to a poundland shop and get Agfa vista and then get it dev and scanned to CD only, at Asda or Tesco super stores for £3.
Before this you could check the camera with the back open and see if things are ok, also check if the seals are ok around the door as they get gummy over the years and could let in light.

Thanks I paid a visit to the local pound shop and picked up some Kodak film earlier today.

Welcome to TFAC Tommy.

I had a Fujica 605 when I was a teenager in the 80s which I think was similar to the STX1. They look beautiful...I'm a sucker for all that chrome, and perform well too.

Hope you enjoy it.
