Hi guys, I've been haunting the forum for some time, just messing about with my new DLSR and got quite taken with the idea of time lapse video's, so i finally get a day off work and gave it a very quick bash.

See what you guys think, feel free to rip me apart.

Cheers! Jimmy

Were you using manual focus or was the wind battering your window? Also, try cropping it down to 16:9 so that it fills the youtube player :)

Hi ohara, thanks for your reply!

I'd left the camera in auto focus for this, since doing it i've seen somewhere to focus the camera and then switch it to manual so that the focus is consistent throughout the shots. I see what you mean, the window does look like it's taking a battering but i think it's focus causing that 'wobble'.

I'll give the 16:9 crop a go, i've also seen a HD option when i saved the file, would that also be a useful option?

Cheers

Jimmy

Your encoded video is already 1080p so that's fine.

As for the crop, you need to actually crop the image within your timeline since HD is 16:9 and APS-C is 3:2 I believe.

What software do you use?

I used windows movie maker, created a slide show and just set the frame delay to 0.05 secs. I see alot of people have Lightroom 3 so was thinking of trying to get a copy of that, but not sure weather that would do all the editing I'd need (inc time lapse stuff) or if I would need photoshop aswell, currently only use GIMP to edit my photo's. As you may well be able to tell I'm only starting out.

You need video software for time lapse really, Timothy Allen (of Human Planet Fame) used quick time pro to do the time lapse for Human Planet but FCP, Premiere Pro or any of them will do it just aswell :D

yeah, manual focus is needed. I have used Quicktime Pro in the past very easy to do.. What intervals did you use?

I use Vegas 10, to create time lapses you import the images, select the first one in the folder then tick the box at the bottom which says "create video from still image sequence" or something like that. Then you get a menu which asks you for certain information such as frame rate, for PAL you would set this to 25 or if you were going for cine look then 24.

Thanks for your replies everyone, I've not had time to re look at this yet, but hopefully after the new year i'll be able to get out and give it another go. Going to get the pro version of quick time, see how i get on with that, hopefully get out into the lakes for some night/ sunrise lapses.

Technics100 - i used an interval of about 0.04s i think, i played around with different setting and found that one about the best.

Ohara - yea i'd been advised about 24fps, with windows media like i used origionally i can get upto 30fps so from that point of veiw it managed ok, i'll try quicktime i think, any idea where i can get Vegas 10? or how much it is?

Cheers

Jimmy
