Just purchased an iMac and i cant wait to be honest.. Apparently its going to take 3 working days to process just because I wanted the extended keyboard!?

Anyways if you have any tips or software/freeware that you recommend getting please let me know..

So far I have Final cut express and Photoshop cs5 just sitting here doing nothing.

I have VisualHub which transforms any form of media file into any other.

Also VLC player which will play any movie clips that Quicktime won't.

You will LOVE your iMac - I find ours simply superb, it hasn't missed a beat since we got it in Jan 09.

caffiene. Free from apple site, and basically when on keeps monitor from going into standby, click again and returns to normal. If you have critical work best to let monitor warm up for 15 mins to get it working best.

Ah... i get the feeling we cant just edit / change the stanby settings on the system?

Thanks for letting me know!

Putting these on my post-it note for the must have apps! thank you fellas!

There is my 370 tips for the apple mac thread you might want to look at. There is a link in my signature to it!

I brought the IMac and couldnt get on with it, top of the range model with the i7 processor, 8 gigs of ram, but Im set in my ways and love the pc Im afraid

Neo Office is a great alt to MS office for Mac. Google it....you won't be disappointed! Plus it's Freeware

Thanks fellas its all being taken on board..
I've just had an email that its been dispatched from the netherlands.. Estimated arrival date is 23rd... Im hoping it'll be here before that though.

The free iLife suite is very good, you'll love iPhotos for all your pics and syncs well with itunes for ipods/iphones. iDVD is really quite powerful for creating professional looking dvd's. In terms of extra software:

- camouflage (free, hides all your desktop icons)
- isquint (free, great app for converting avi's, mpg's etc. into ipod/iphone sized videos)
- slim battery monitor (free, extra customizable battery info for your status bar)
- Aperture 3! (£160, everything you love about iPhoto but with so much more power. I bought this after using iPhoto for a few years)
- handbrake (free, dvd burning software to put your dvd's onto your iphone/hard drive

Macs are brilliant, and iMac's are so well designed. if you have an iphone there are a few other apps you should get on both:

- Air mouse server (imac) and air mouse (iphone), use your iphone as a mouse!
- 1password (should get this even if you don't have an iphone but great software for securely generating and storing a different complicated password for all the websites etc. you use. if you do have the iphone app too, it'll sync)

Just opened the box delivered by UPS today - a 27" i7 with SSD and 2Tb now up and running (with an additional 8gb Ram from Crucial- so 12 in there now). Been going for about an hour. LOVELY screen and it seems ok speed wise - just run a couple of bigish Photoshop layered files through (about a gig each) - it ate them with out any problems, filters seem nice and quick. Impressed so far - this is my first iMac - have always bought G5 big silver boxes before . . . This one was SO easy to set up and get going!

As a long term Mac user - I always think back to the original IIci I bought back in 1990 - cost just over 4 grand . . . and had a heady 40mb hard drive . . . (no that was NOT a typo!) Things have kind of moved on a little bit! Thankfully!

Woah, im jealous that you've had yours before mine!
I didnt go for the 27 as I thought it might have been a little on the large side for me.. if they did something in between it probably would have got me to bite :D.. Im glad its working perfectly for you, as I have heard that some iMacs have had a buzzing noise coming from them and a yellow tinge appears on the screen... But I have no idea if they were on the older 24in iMacs or the newer ones.. :(

TNT reports pickup date on thw 20th, however apple states it has been shipped and should be with me by the 22nd... So I have no idea if tnt's date is my delivery date or if they're picking up from apple on that date...

confusing..

I switched to an IMac at the end of last year and haven't looked back. The only thing of note I've found is that coming from a PC background I put Sophos AV on it. It took me a while to realise that it was causing my system to slow down massively...so no AV.

Also check out the touchpad. I found the Apple mouse a bit small and it was causing some pain in my hand. The touchpad has solved that

Just wanted to say, received the iMac today.... and its christmas come early :D...
Anyways thanks to everyone for the handy tips!... gonna go explore.

What options was that? extra machine guns? rockets? :D... I had the extended keyboard which changed from 24hr delivery to 3 days for delivery.. however considering I ordered on the saturday night (midnight) it did arrive on tuesday.. so That was quite good.

Wooo Im happy for you!.. I havent touched the windows laptop since I've received the iMac..

Its a student deal so £50 for Apple care and about 15% off then I should be able to claim the VAT back too  and the whole lot against tax.

Thats brilliant!, the only deal I had was from my works through the apple epp and only had 6% off.. still every peny counts!

What will she be studying at uni?

Just got my 3rd Imac on Tuesday - had the last one 5 years and man what a difference. Having used PS and LR which are both obviously excellent thought I'd have a look at Aperture 3 which I have to say is outstanding - really fast, easy to use(particularly brushes) and manage workflow etc but PS still holds the aces for those extra touches.
