Yes
despite the title there is nothing saucy to see :bonk:

Anyway so I would like an external flash for my D90. I mostly like to go outdoors in natural light and take pictures but I figure with the winter months coming etc. it would be nice to be able to do some indoor stuff.
My upper limit is £200 and so the two candidates are SB-600 (£190) and Nissin Di622 (£100).
Putting tech specs aside (because reviews favour both in terms of flash performance), the only reason I would go for a SB-600 is for CLS, but then I'm not really sure I'd want to spend extra £90 on something I may use rarely
Or the alternative way to look at it is having 0% experience with flashes, would a Nissin be a good starting point and if I do feel like getting creative in the future I can invest in something more, maybe a SB-800?

The Nissin does CLS, as a slave, same as the SB600. And you can operate it by wireless remote off your D90's pop-up in commander mode (I think the D90 does commander doesn't it?).

Nissins are good guns. Also look at Sigma and Metz - they're good too and also do full CLS. The top-end guns in the range are always the ones that will function as commander/master units, while the cheaper models work as remote slaves only.

You're probably best going with CLS for your first, but another option might be to go the 'strobist.com' route -- two or three cheap manual flashes, which obviously take more setting up.

I don't think that's correct, Richard. It may well be possible to trigger it optically from the D90 whilst that is in Commander mode, but that's not the same thing as it having the CLS functionality.

The Di622 simply ignores the pre-flash from the CLS allowing it to fire at the correct time, however the power level needs to be set manually on the flashgun, you can't adjust the power output from the camera as you would be able to do with the SB600/700/800/900, nor can it be included in a group with other CLS units.

Sorry, yes I think you're right Graham - it's not remote CLS (unless it's on the end of an iTTL cord I spose, not quite the same thing ;) ). Apologies.

It's the bigger Nissin you need for that.

Graham, Check your links on the 'Strobist Gear for Sale' linked thread - many of the images are no longer available.
