Hey
As you may know i am pretty new to this.
A friend of mine is in a competition this evening and has asked me to take some shots.
A have a nikon D90 with an 18-105 lens. have not had it long and am using tonight as a practise to get used to my camera and also to help her out. But also want to make sure i get the best shots i can for her.

Anyone have any helpful tips?

what sort of competition?

What will the lighting be like?

If you new to it all, shoot in program mode and I guessing its going to be in a fairly dark place as its in the evening? Shoot with a ISO around 400-800 if it is. If its light shoot 100-200. If you cant really go wrong in program mode.

Is the miss beds competition so am guessing it will be inside with generous lighting. Im also worried about flash being too bright. does that sometimes cause a problem. i dont have an additional flash. only what is integrated.

You can lower the intensity of your flash
