Hi everyone,

I have my first rugby match tomorrow at the local amateur club, they have showed good interest and have been very positive towards me shooting there matches regularly.

Would it be better to shoot in raw or jpeg, i have the nikon d7000, 6 fps.
I have practiced in both formats at home and both seem to shoot fast enough...i think.

Secondly, i will be trying out my new monopod, although its advised not to use VR on a tripod is this the same for monopods?

The lens i will be using is only the basic 55 - 200 mm....for now.

Thanks in advance guys and gals.

Hi,

If it is your first time then shoot RAW so you can give all your concentration to the action. You can then worry about the exposure, WB etc afterwards. The better you get and the more comfortable you feel then move over to JPEG.

Don't use VR. Turn it off and only switch it on when you really, really need too. With a bright sunny day tomorrow you won't need to use it.

Telling someone to shoot RAW and not worry about exposure and white balance is a sure fire recipe for producing really shoddy photographs!

Bin the monopod. You shouldn't need it for a 55-200 and more to the point it'll hamper you.

Shoot from a low perspective, either by kneeling or sitting on the ground, or taking a stool.

If it's constant light, use manual and take a reading off the grass about halfway across the pitch (assuming that there are no stadiums casting a shadow). On your lens use the widest aperture to knock out the background.

Use Continuous focus and high speed drive. Generally, for rugby, I use the FP one above the centre point, but that's personal preference.

If the light's changing or there are large areas of shade across the pitch, use Av (A).

Frankly I'd use Jpeg for your first time.

With 200mm max, you may have to follow (read chase) the game a bit from the sidelines. try to get ahead of the action.

That should do for the moment.

Thanks guys,

Well i have been and done it. Must say i loved every minute, the passion emotion all come flooding back.
After looking at them tho, i have already criticised my work and look forward to the next game. If i decide to stick at this i definately need to buy a wider aperture lens, the ground had way too much clutter in the back no matter where i stood....
Thanks for the tips.
