first rant of 2011..Petrol prices!

You think gas is expensive. Check the rail fare from, say Manchester to London. You could buy a good lens for that.

Only a fool (or MP..) would pay the turn up on the day, peak time full price ticket. Most ordinary folk would realise it's much cheaper to book in advance. How many people honestly wake up at 6am in the morning to find they have to be in London for 9? Not many I'd guess!

When did you last get a train from Manchester to London? My wife has to wake up at 6am to get into London for 9 and we only live in Bedfordshire!

Seriously though, you're right and how many would do that journey on a daily basis?

A couple of years ago there was a campaign to get the money we pay for a tax disc put onto fuel to make it fairer, the more you use the road, the more you pay through the fuel you use, this is great in theory and fairer but why hasn't it been done ?
Fuel price is so high now, road tax should be abolished !

I've always known it called that and i was born in 1967

It's called Vehicle Excise Duty and it goes into the general taxation pot, like the other taxes. Calling it Road Tax just gives people a false sense of greater entitlement to using the roads than non-"Road Tax" payers.

Probably about 18 months ago.. got up at 7.00. Dropped off at Mcr Piccadilly at 7.30, left at 7.40, was in London Euston for 9.45 and being fleeced for a coffee in the British Museum by 10.00

£18 advance ticket (granted.. with 1/3 off YP rail card!)

That's all very well - but try getting a reduced train ticket when you're closer to London - costs £24 odd for me per day, yet I can drive there in less than an hour!!

Virgin is currently £11, booked in advance, well was yesterday in an advert I saw.

I got the 6am train from warrington a few weeks ago, 2 hrs 10mins to London Euston, I was well impressed, it arrived to the minute, my connection to cambridge was also on time and I arrived in cambridge to the minute
it was on a saturday though.

Having said that, the ticket I get also includes a travelcard for tubes/bus etc

Just the train alone is £11 per journey (IE single one way), a single return anytime ticket is £16.50. I rarely get a seat on the train, unless get a train before 6AM. Add the cost of parking at the station and it's easy to see why people are still not using public transportation.
That's not even from a local station - it's one that's 20mins away. The local station is £20.10 per journey, £33.50 for an anytime ticket and £41.50 for a travelcard!!! (and takes 40mins more because it goes in the other direction first) If there's more than 1 person travelling, it's absolutely ridiculous!

I went to Manchester station and at the ticket office I asked for a return ticket.... 'Where to?' asked the girl at the desk .......

'Back here of course' I replied :D

The only fuel protest that would work is if every single person that bought fuel refused to buy any for a month and used PT instead.

Public transport barely has sufficient capacity for its regular users, despite the massive costs involved in using it - don't think there would be enough space for any of the nations car drivers to squeeze on board even if they wanted to.

Not buying a particular oil companies fuel won't do much good, as even if BP or Esso did cave in and reduce their prices, it would amount to nothing as 3/4s of the cost is tax.

It would be great if public transport could actually be improved, or the tax burden on the motorist could be reduced but I can't see either happening until Browns debts are repayed.

oh dear i think we could have a fuel protest looming soon, not a whisper this time a full on proper one ?

After the year 2000 protests (which did succeed in grinding the country to a massive panic buying halt), Blair was made to look like a powerless fool, so he introduced new laws which limited what protesters could do without being arrested. Hence why all the subsequent protests haven't really had any affect.

I don't think the French would let these new rules stop them reminding the government who are really in charge though...

Assuming that's a diesel, the egr valve and the inlet manifold could probably do with a good clean. Age shouldn't really matter if it's well maintained.

Thought EGR was purely used to reduce NOx emissions - my money would be on a dirty / dodgy MAF sensor or a boost leak causing it to mis-fuel. Could even be something silly like tyre pressures..

If the majority wish the TAX to be reduced then they should listen as one of the tory policies was a fuel price stabiliser so that the TAX would be reduced to keep fuel prices more stable.

No no no. If people call out for that now, i guarantee they'll introduce it - and fix petrol prices at 130p forever!
