I've recently bought a Nikon D5000 and I'm aware of the limitations of the on-board flash. Consequently, I'm toying with the idea of buying a bounce flash, but the question is... which one?

My instinctive choice would be the SB600 or SB900, the latter would be useful in the future if I decided to try off-camera flash photography. However, do any of you have non-proprietary recommendations of flashes that are comparatively priced and could later be expanded for off-camera use?

I hope to eventually use the flash for general usage and possibly portfolio shots.

Many thanks
Steve

get an sb600, don't need the sb900 now.

off-brand recommended ones are the yonguno ones that flash in the pan on the forum sells. Think they're on special right now too :D

there are downsides, they'll get you going fine but don't have the build quality or CLS support that the sb600 does... however they are a LOT cheaper ;)

Did you mean "competitively" rather than "comparitively" priced?

For off-camera use, you can use virtually any flash with cable, optical, infra-red or radio triggering. You'll get more convenient and foolproof results if you stick with your camera manufacturer's kit.

Current 3rd-party flash brands worth considering include Metz, Nissin and Sigma.

Welcome to TP

Thanks for the tips. Yes, I did mean 'competitively' priced, it'd been a long day and alcohol may have also been involved. ;)

I am erring towards the SB600, as there are enough factors with photography that I can screw up, without adding flash problems to the mix. :)
