I've just ventured into the world of DSLR after using a compact camera to take pictures for years. I purchased a Nikon D3100 Kit, and this is my first post on here, so thought I'd include my first picture as well. (Well, first picture I think looks OK out of the hundreds I've taken!).

I've had the camera maybe two days, and took it for a walk around Kirkstall Abbey in Leeds, seeing as it's next door to where I live.

Settings were f/11, ISO400, shutter 1/400, focal length 18mm, using the kit lens (18-55mm VR)

I'd appreciate your input on what you like/don't like about the pic, and comments about what you would have done different. :)

I think you have done a good job..good exposure, good dynamic range, but just a great record shot of an interesting building.

Hi Rob, welcome!

You've got a great camera and lens there, lots of potential.

My advice is take as many images as you can, push the limits etc... Try get into the habit of bracketing your shots, normal exposure, along with under and over exposure shots, I normally shoot around 6/7 images of a single subject so I've a choice of what to go for etc, a great learning tool.

Join as many photo forums as you can, view other photographer's work and see what you like and do your theme on it, blitz it....

Go for it, every day is a learning day.

Only my tuppence worth input.

Best wishes;
peter
