Hi I'm deciding to get my first motorbike but I'm quite lost with what to get are there any bikers here who could give me some advice? I'm looking to get a 125cc or less with a budget of £500 but to be honest not fond of spend that.
It will be driven around london aswell.
Thanks for reading!

A motorbike in London  I hope you're spending as much on protective gear and training as you are on the bike

Of course I am. . . .... .. ;)

For 500 your going to be pretty limited, I would avoid 50ccs myself just due to the danger that they do pose they have b****r all acceleration to get away from a dozy car driver who hasnt seen you and is barreling down upon you.

Maybe look at a second hand ybr125 or rd125 both yamahas, i did my cbt on an rd125. If your very lucky and could up your budget to about a 1000 you might be able to get a high mileage Yzf r125 or a cbr 125.

I was lucky enough to my my Yzf new for 2600 and that was bloody cheap

Thats my beauty :D Yzf r125 with the rossi kit and a sports exhaust

With the clothing i managed to pick up gloves, boots, synth jacket and trousers and a helmet all for about 330 which wasnt bad at all, but i would advise against going straight into london on your bike you really do need time to learn how your bike handles, mine was totally different to the one i did my cbt on

Edit: If your mechanically minded you might have more luck, friend of mine whos really into her bikes just picked up and ybr with a few wiring problems with 200

Please, please buy and USE the safety kit. Had I not been wearing mine when I wasn't seen by a car driver as I was travelling at 30mph I wouldn't be writing this to you now.

A Honda cbr125 is a wonderful workhorse that will serve you well. I would agree with the comment above about the 50cc squirt machines, all the power of a water gun with a hole in the chamber. Also spend money on lessons beyond the CBT, they will help you stay alive.

Keep safe, it is the best way to enjoy life!

Safety is first I guess xD and I was looking at the CBR125 argh lets see if I can stretch my budget.

I hate to discourage your from the cbr or the yzf as i ride the latter but, on my cbt im 19 and ive got diabetes (affects it a little) the cheapest insurance i managed was 1300 (1500) as i pay monthly. The CBR and YZF are both class 6 insurance which if your a first time rider without any no claims your going to get SHAFTED

Get the cheapest / least depreciating 125 you can find, the second you've past your test you'll want something better :)

and two basic rules of motorcycling

THEY CANNOT SEE YOU (even if looking at you)

AND IF THEY CAN SEE YOU IT'S SO THEY CAN HIT YOU

remember, on motorbikes, paranoia saves lives :)

Agree with the above - buy the newest CG125 you can get for your money.

Don't go near a £500 2-stroke.

Do you have a car licence?

If not do it first, get your road skills THEN go biking.

You don't get many chances to screw up on 2 wheels without getting maimed.

A 125cc BSA Bantam - they will both hear and see!!

Two stroke though!!! Pain in the rear for a first bike due to the gasoline-oil mix

the 50cc restricted mopeds are dangerous, you need to be able to maintain traffic speed

in town or city where top speeds are limited anything above 70 cc will probably be enough poke, not a sports machine but able to maintain presence in traffic without cars trying to squeeze past you because you're holding them up. 90cc is enough to get you upto 50mph eventually. For 40mph+, dual carriageways and open roads get a 125cc.

I'd recommend the CG125 or other commuter type unfaired sit up style 125.
Sports machines are asking for trouble and the fairing panels will cost a fortune when (not if) you drop it.

You dont just need a jacket & lid for protection. Make sure you've got good boots that protect your feet (heavy soles that wont crush), ankles and up the side of your legs. Good gloves and bike trousers that protect thighs, bum and knees (get CE knee pads, forget the sliders). Use the helmet properly, making sure it fits and is done up properly and don't muck about with dodgy visors, replace them when scratched (hell at night when all you can see is bright stars everywhere)

£500 .
thats a pretty low budget.
you could try looking for something older in the 100cc-125cc bracket, but it aint a lot of cash.
CG's are still about but take someone knowledgeable with you when you buy.
old bikes are often tired, with a lot of bodgeing.
$strokes are as said, a bteer bet for low budget money.
if your thinking of riding in the smoke. GET SOME TRAINING.
it may save your neck.
if they dont sound like a bag of bolts, theyre likely to be more reliable.
Hi Viz is your friend.

Don't go for a plastic-fantastic sportsbike, get something cheap and basic (CG125 is ideal), leaving some of your budget for gear. Save your dosh for the day you pass your test!

My 1st bike was a Honda 125CBT, 2nd and last bike was a Suz gsxr
