I have always been less than impressed with my compacts macro ability and it had kind of put me off the whole idea of macro. But between some of the shots i have seen on here and a few other places (mostly underwater photography) i have been inspired to give macro a go.

So what would be a good first macro lens nothing to extravicant to start with. Guess to begin with i would play around indoors then move on to little critters out side and eventually underwater.

Oh and i know underwater photography is a costly past time i am saving but he above water photography is getting more costly as i see other things and think oh i'd like to try that.

Would help if you say what camera are you using so people can advise. ;)

:bonk: I'll get my coat.

I have a canon 400D with kit lens and a 75-300mm lens and and a shopping list

depends what focal length?

Otherwise....sigma 105mm - 150mm - 180mm....Tamron 90mm

That's better, I would suggest the sigma 105 or canon ef 100 macro or Tamron 90 all great 1:1 macro lenses, if you don't want to spend that much look at getting a set of extension tubes like the jessops or kenko auto tubes, make sure they fit ef-s lenses though.

The Tamron 90mm f2.8 has its limitations (the barrel length almost doubles when zooming) but apart from that its quite a nice lens for the money IMO

I havent used any other macro lenses though.

EDIT: Click here for a sample picture I took with my Tamron 90mm and a D50.

Thanks guys gives me somewhere to start looking
