I'm just about to invest in some lighting equipment for portrait work (I currently have just a 580exII) and was wondering what people thought of this setup...

Umbrella adapter from Calumet - http://www.calumetphoto.co.uk/item/MF6830/

Can you think of anything else I'll need or recommend any better kit for a similar price? Current budget is looking at about £200 for the lot.

Cheers!

I think you can get the unbrella adaptor from FITP too? Also the light stand can be had from Amazon for about £12 each. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Photography-Light-professional-studio-photolamps/dp/B0011363NS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=miscellaneous&qid=1263316630&sr=8-1

As for your setup it looks like quite a standard two light source setup and should get you going. If you can stretch your budget I would suggest sticking with Canon speedlites as refresh times are better and the 580EXII can control certain canon speedlites complete with E-TTL metering.

to be brutally honest I'd get at least one beefy umbrella adaptor, FiTP's are nice and light and small but can move a wee bit with a large brolly so with a softbox I would expect to droop/slip. I use a manfrotto 026 (I think thats the number) and it can slip a wee bit if not tight

That's what I was thinking too. I have a friend who has FitP's umbrella adaptors and he complains that they're not strong enough

they're great for bare lights or snoots or grids as they're soooo easy to move I'm sure little brollies 'd be ok but I have a massive calumet one :D

Great post.
I've spent the last couple of days thinking about kit and this answered loads of my questions.
Thanks

Looks like a well thought out budget kit to me

I would add a reflector for sure, and don't forget a background system. And a flash meter when funds allow.

Recycling times will probably be annoying, but you can help that a lot by always using fresh batteries, even changing them half way through, lights closer rather than further away, plus highish ISO and low f/number, which will allow you to turn the flashes down a bit for faster shooting.

I've got this brolly adapter - strong, £15 from Interfit - but the Calumet one looks good. http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-interfit-strobies-umbrella-holder-with-hotshoe-adapter/p1031899
