First letter of the file name of (some?) Canon cameras changes to "_" when AdobeRGB colour space is selected

I have noticed on both my Canon EOS 80D and EOS R that the first character of the file name is sometimes "_", so the file name is like "_MG_0658.CR3" instead of the usual "IMG_0658.CR3". After a bit of Googling, and some exprerimentation, it turns out that the explanation is the colour space selected. When it is sRGB, the first letter of the file name is whatever you have set it to ("IMG_" by default - but you can change it to any 4 character string). However, if AdobeRGB colour space is selected, the first character is replaced with an underscore. My Googling suggests that this is also true of the 70D at least. Maybe it is a feature of all Canons?

Are others aware of this? What is the point? The colour space is recorded as part of the EXIF metadataand and RAW converter software can access this and behave accordingly. I don't see that it is particularly useful to signal it in the file name in this way. As far as I can spot in the Advanced User Guide, there is no way to turn off ot modify this "feature".

Sony cameras work in a similar way, I think they prefix with '_' rather than replacing the first letter.

Didn't realise we were onto CS3 files, I'm still on CS2.

Is this a mirrorless thang or am I lagging behind in the techie dept?

CR3 is the new RAW format for the EOS R series cameras. A right pain because much of my software (RawTherapee, digiKam, GIMP) has taken a while to catch up and support it!

Nikon do this as well :) I think it's done so that you can tell at a glance what colour space was used when taking the image.
