just bought my first dslr a canon eos 30d and im now looking into what first lens to buy currently considering a Canon 28-135mm f4 , Canon 18-200mm , Tamron 18-270mm or a Canon 50mm F1.8 Prime.

Opinions and advice please ? :) looking for a all round/ walk about type lens untill im 100% what style of photography i prefere

The 50mm will be best for image quality, however the others are obviously more versatile. In the price range of the superzooms it may be better to get a shorter range, eg Sigma 18-50 f2.8 macro which will give better image quality.

not sure if it matters to you but I think it's f3.5-5.6 and has IS? If it this one I think it's a great walkabout lens, could be a bit wider but it's very decent.

If you're not sure what focal lengh you want, this may give you a great idea.

The f1.8 on the 50mm is very nice for subject isolation, however obviously the it's a fixed focal lengh (of course there are occasions you can zoom with your feet to a certain extent).

I'd go for the 28.135 (or Tamron I have no experience of) and get the 50mm as well at a later date. But then I'm not you and it depends what youare looking for!

Good luck

Al

For me it would be the Canon 18-200 just purely because it gives you the option to photograph pretty much anything. I would definately advise going for a Canon lens rather than a Canon fit, the quality is much better as I have found out :)

TBH I'd wait a bit longer, save a bit more and then decide exactly what you want to shoot. "Everything" lenses tend to be a compromise unless you pay megabucks, even then if you decide you want to shoot macro / landscape etc you'll still need dedicated quality glass..

Walkabout is a bit subjective as well, walkabout around town is a different kettle of fish from walking about the countryside.

I'm also going to stick my neck out and say that the 50mm focal length is rather subject to hype, it's potentially an awkward focal length and a lot of zoom users just cannot adjust to it... I'd suggest try before you buy with that one, though there's a ready made 2nd hand market if you did buy then decided it wasn't for you.
