I've been asked to take some photos at my son's football match on Sunday, they want some shots for the end of season presentation and for next years calendar.

Not done this type of thing before, but excited about giving my new d7000 it's first proper outing - I'll be using the Nikon 70-300 VR lens, not the fastest so hope that the sun is out! (wish I had a 70-200 f2.8 )

I've been looking back at old posts on here for tips and advice - so thank you all (KIPAX in particular your shots are inspirational!).

My specific question is whether to us the lenses VR function? I'll be trying to keep my shutter speed between 1/500 and 1/1000, so does that negate the benefit of VR?

I have a monopod, but don't plan to use it as my kit is not that heavy, and these games are not very long.

Thanks all.

If you shooting handheld at long focal ranges ie. 150-300mm - keep the VR on - to get 1/500 or 1/1000 shutter you will need a high ISO - at weather looks crap for sunday! ;)

Rubbish advice, dont shoot handheld, use your Monopod and TURN THE VR OFF you will be aiming to get high/highish shutter speeds so the VR is absolutly hopeless and if anything will slow the AF system down.

Absoloutly do NOT use VR or IS for football or indeed most other sports..

Even under flodlights or indoor low light situations where all the help you can get to achieve a good shutter speed.. still dont use it..

When shooting football you do a lot of changing subjects and thus changing focus.. the whole point of expensive equipment for me is the fast auto focus.. you need to suddenly change from subject A to subject B ..focus and shoot.. IS/VR will slow down the initial focus and completly make you miss the shot..

In normal day to day shooting you wont notice the slowness of IS/VR kicking in.. but get used to needing fast auto fucus and you will see its annoyingly slow

I didn't know this - presumably the same applies for the Canon's IS?

Turn it off for football? same applies with no monopod?
Yes Joe, turn it off, it is of no use at all for field sports where the main emphasis is on trying to freeze action, ie fast shutter speed.

Thanks everybody for replying, appreciate it. VR off it is then!

With the lack of speed on my lens, I will have to compromise on the ISO as mentioned....

Wish me luck!
