Well of all the things I thought I might be doing this afternoon, heading out with a film camera and then developing said HP5 in the darkroom was not one of them. Two of my A level students wanted to have a go with film cameras and so we promptly loaded up a couple of OM10s and headed off around campus. Lots of amusing questions ranging from, "why only 36 shots", to "how do we preview the pics!". Once in the darkroom, demonstrating how to extract the film from the canister, spool it onto the reel and then get it into the developer tank was met with remarks like, "that's well long, sir!" until I then put all the stuff into a black bag and turned out the lights - then it all went quiet when I told them it all had to be done in darkness and by feel / touch only. Really surprised myself about how all the techniques came back from popping the film and winding it on.
Whilst waiting for the developer to do its thing, I calculated it must have been 20 years since I had done this. And once the negs came out - looking pretty good - I felt a quiet pang of excitement for the good old days of when Photography genuinely felt like magic!
Have got another couple of films to try out this weekend.
Looking forward to doing some printing next week. If the results are any good, I will post them up here.
