I recently had the chance to run the first real field test of a prototype Jollylook Instant Square back mounted to my Mamiya RB67, and I thought I’d share some initial impressions and results.
Since my lens shutter speeds aren't exactly reliable, I played it safe: f/32 across the board, with what I believe is around 1/200s, the fastest setting my shutter allows. Most of the shots came out slightly overexposed, but I actually really like the result — the images have a soft, dreamy, almost ethereal quality that gives them character. There’s a certain unpredictability I find really appealing when mixing precision gear with something a bit more experimental.
As usual with Instax film, I’ve noticed that some of the tones continue to settle and shift slightly after the initial development.
Still plenty of refining to do — from dialing in exposure to working out the handling workflow — but overall, I’m quite excited about the potential here. If anyone’s been experimenting with Instax on medium format gear, I’d love to hear about your experiences too.
Happy to answer any questions!
