Yes
Hello all,

Am slightly nervous as I've been asked to conduct a photoshoot with an up and coming music artist and it's the first 'proper' studio shoot I've ever done. I've done a couple of weddings, a funeral. My studio knowledge boils down to a 10 week course so I've got the basics of lighting.

The management and artist are looking for this kind of feel (flickr links) so any input as to the lighting setup would be appreciated.

That photo was lit with a softbox each side (pretty much at right angles) and with an on-axis fill light

Do you have access to the following:

A room with a decent amount of space
One light neutrally coloured wall that you can get at least 15 feet back from
two minimum / three ideal lights
two strip boxes
one softbox
a triggering system for the flashes

If yes then there is no reason you can't get the results you linked to. If not then there will inevitably be a compromise in the images.

If the job is paid (which it should be), then look into hiring a studio, take a mate along and stage a dummy shoot and look at the results. That way you will know the space and the lighting setup that you want to use before the actual shoot.

But most of all - good luck !

Thanks Garry - that's what I suspected.

Hodders - I'm not getting paid for it as a) the manager is a friend of mine, b) it's my first ever studio shoot and I'd like the images for a portfolio, and c) they are paying for a professional studio, a make up artis and whoever I want to grab to assist :|

If you are hiring a pro studio, there should be someone on hand to help you with the lighting set-up should you require any assistance.

Enjoy the shoot and good luck.
