Both look like they are very well executed 'colour pops'.

First thought is that they both need significant cropping - the bus for instance a portrait look.

Second thought is that they are 'too good' and brutal. Try (and it's just my opinion) de-saturating the b/w bit but don't lose all the colour and the 'colour pop' bit just a bit more saturated - ie. not as much of a change in colour between backround and the 'pop' bit.

Perhaps blur the background?

If you post the original bus one I'll show you what I mean - (he says!! what I do to it may be rubbish!!).

@E17Phil - Thanks a ton. I would really appreciate if show me an example as I very new to togy and editing.

On my iphone now..off to work..will post the original bus one in the eveng...feel free to play with it when you have time...

Thank you once again...

@ Philip - Here's the original..feel free to play when you've go the time...Do understand what you mean though from Christine's edit..

@Christine - Thanks a lot Christine for your work...much appreciated...a basic question though...once we start cropping images and decide to enlarge it thereafter; would it not get pixelated?

Another way to give it more of a 3d feel is to add a white layer above the BG with a low opacity, with a copy of the bus on top.

That stands out really well Wayne...thanks for tip..

Dont know, for some reason I was too obsessed with colour pop-ups, and was too determined to get the BG as B/W (well the obsession has really come from a poster of edited Eiffel Tower I saw at my mates)

May be should have thought more laterally...Glad I am here amongst some experts..:)

@ Wayne - You may have an answer to this as I do see lot's of input from you on post-processing questions...

It's the same question I asked Christine earlier - once we start cropping images and decide to enlarge it thereafter; would it not get pixelated?

You should always keep your full size master, make a duplicate image (image/duplicate) from that then crop that one, that way if you need a bigger version you have the full size to go back to and make a new duplicate etc etc.
Enlarging an image can lead to it being pixelated (moslty it shows if you take a small image and make it very big), but when you enlarge photoshop interpolates the image and "adds" pixels to make it bigger, it isn't just making the existing pixels bigger.
What you do tend to get is jpeg artifact, this is to do with the way a jpeg is made and the way it's compressed when saved, this often shows as a blocky appearence.

@ Wayne - thank you for a very detailed answer Wayne. Does make sense..only thing though with DSLR photos is disk space on computer..guess it would be worth investing in an external hard-drive..

Much appreciated..:)

@ Christine - thanks...never thought you were ignoring ;)

You know when I said my version may be rubbish? Well it may be!! What I had in my mind isn't the way it came out - but hey ho that's what happens at times :-)

Basically I've blurred the background and put a vignette on it. As you see the background isn't full b/w but has an opacity of about 75% - ie. showing some colour through.

Instead of 'cutting out' the bus I used a Layer Mask and 'painted' away the b/w to show the colour underneath (ask if you want a step by step on this).

In PS there are many ways of converting to b/w - for instance Image > Calculations (a search on YouTube or some of the magazine websites will show you).

And remember, it's what you like not anyone else which is important - there is no right or wrong (within reason!).

If you haven't discovered 'Actions' check them out on Deviant Art.

Cheers mister, Phil

@Philip - thanks..that was quick..very very kind of you...!!

I have kind of got the concept..as explained above in one of the posts, was too obsessed with B/W background..but obviously a less brutal one looks defo better..no doubt..will try applying these to some of my other images..
