I was thinking of spending a couple of hundred on a used Canon 400D as a first DSLR, then I saw that for not much more I can get a new 1100D.

So, which would you recommend?

Between the two i will go with 400D, but you can't save little few more and go with say 500D at least? i am sure your budget is not in range of x0D models or even 7D for example, because xx0D or xxx0D are the least versions or models of Canon, if you can get a 40D or 50D that will be a better choice, or i have 30D which i want to sell, and i bought 500D for my wife/kids, 30D body is better design but 500D is newer technology, i used 400D in our photography club and really i see it very simple cheap as my 350D.

Buy another camera if you can, if not then 400D out of those 2.

I don't really want to push the budget until I find out if I can get on with a DSLR. If I find I'm using it a lot and getting some good results then I'll splash out on an xxD body.

Do the 400D's hold their value becaue they are a better camera than the newer 1100D?

Well, i can't help here, it is your decision at the end, all i know is that the more the number increasing in Canon bodies models, the less advanced it becomes, 400D could be an older camera, but it is slightly more advanced than 1100D camera, but why not pass those and go with 450D or 500D, i think 450D is very close in price to 400D if not so much.

I really didn't understand your point about if you will use DSLR a lot, why can't you borrow one from your friends or rent it and give it a use for 1 week, instead go with any advanced P&S new or previous generation one, if that is also not sure to get you shoot a lot then simply don't do photography, your mobile will be enough.

Time for some research on ebay then

I think the 1100D should hold it's value a little better as I believe it's one of canons current models - so people will inevitably see it in the shops and search for it on ebay.

If you start really getting into photography then it's times to sit down, work out a budget and start planning an upgrade route for your equipment - but thats the future and not necessarily guaranteed. :)

Personally I would go for a 4xx / 5xx type of body, should be cheap on auction sites & are a better camera than the 1100. I started with a 450D & loved it, got some cracking shots with it as well.
As M.S. asked, what do you want to do with it?
I was just wanting to get better quality family snapshots, not "missing the moment" when the kids move so fast and a point & shoot simply couldn't do the job, ie blured shots, missed the action etc. I was focussing on the fun aspect & just used the one lens, efs 18-200, which gave me loads of flexibility & allowed me the range of point & shoot but with much better images ( and loads of fun!).
Above all else though, just do it & have a good time :welcome:

Why not try a used Canon 1000D? It was my first camera that really snowballed my interest in photography.

You could pick up a used one on eBay very cheaply and if you decide it's not for you or if a DSLR is for you then you could probably sell it on without losing much at all.
I'm sure a Nikon D3000 could probably be had for a similar price.

The 400D is 5 years old and although was a better camera in relative terms to the 1100D in the range (if 1100D had existed) things have moved on in that time.
An 1100D will perform as well (and better in some areas) as a 400D plus it is new and not 5 years old so less likely to malfunction.

For £200 an 1100D is great value and you will not be losing much if you decide to upgrade in the future (not that you would really need to if you remain on general photography and don't fall to upgraditis)

I have just just sold a 400d as I upgraded, I cannot daycare single bad word about it, always reliable, battey life was good, although mine was gripped, in one word it was great.
The main downside to it was there was no live view, however living with this IMO actually helped my improve my photography

Just to update an old thread, I ended up with a used 450D and I love it. I've used it loads more than I thought I would and photography is now almost a hobby. I've already bought the Canon 50mm F1.8 lens, and I'm now looking to upgrade the kit 18-55mm lens.

Hi Andy

Not sure if it's still the case but the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 was always highly regarded (non IS) and I think the IS version now also. A lot cheaper than the Canon version.

Depends what you shoot but if looking for longer range the Canon 85mm f1.8 is also great value, though a prime of course not a zoom.

Good luck.

Al

I think you can go ahed with the 1100D one if it's cheaper than the other. The only major difference I can notice is the megapixel but I don't think the megapixel is that important to consider because a camera with over 5 MP should be alright for most purposes. So, you've a chance to save some money with 1100D.

I found a very useful tutorial for buying DSLR. You might like to check it out,
