Hoping for some advice please as i'm still learning the basics but i will soon be getting my hands on my first dslr and have been recommended the following site www.mpbphotographic.co.uk. Having viewed this site it's a case of deciding either Canon or Nikon? and have heard the Nikon D80 was a winner but just wanted some help with this as i have been told not to over pay for the body and concentrate on buying a quality lens? my aim is for quality all purpose travel shots hopefully i can do some long exposure? I'm unsure on the lens side of things and don't understand what i require to begin with any suggestions would be great. I have around £450 to play with and really don't mind going down the second hand route as most people tend to treat the cameras well.

Thanks :)

I'm sure someone with more experience will jump in here, but I was told when looking, by a couple of different people to avoid the D80.

I bought a second hand D80 with the kit lens and happy with it. However I would suggest that you have a look at D90.

My reason behind the suggestion is soon you will get the upgrade bug like I did. But as I had bought a number of lens and flash I decide to stop spending too much money.

Go into Jessops and have a feel of the D90 and other Canon cameras. See what feels comfortable in your hands before you buy. Do you know any one with either Nikon or Canon? If you do may be buy that brand so you can share the lens.

Don't forget to factor in the cost of other items you will/may have to buy like bag, memory card.

Do remember that there are other manufacturers apart from Canon and Nikon, they may be the largest but it doesn't neccessarily mean that you have to go with them, try looking at offerings from Pentax and Sony as well, the Pentax K-R or the slightly older K-X is are excellent first DSLR's.

This is also very true

Thanks for the advice people i will look into pentax and sony, could anyone recommend a good web site to understanding lenses what why and when kind of thing?

Thanks

Stephen the body of the Canon is far more expensive than the lens would this be advised? i only ask as i have been given different advice but appreciate your view?

Pete.

Having looked at the links suggested here can i offer up the suggestion of the 1100D, how exactly the 2 bodies stack up in terms of specs i'm not too sure off the top of my head but for similar money you could get yourself a brand new 1100D with the 18-55mm lens kit.

Hi Pete

The lens Stephen has shown is a kit lens and yes is a lot cheaper, but will start you off and you can then upgrade from there, once you know your needs / requirements.

My 40D kit lens was a 17-85IS lens - a better lens than the 18-55IS lens, is more expensive. There are mixed reviews over the lens, but I am very happy with mine.

Once you know what you need / want, then people can be more help specifically...

Hi,

I've just bought my first dslr about 3 weeks ago. It was also from mpb and their service was awesome. I was, just like you, looking at the d80. But after reading a few reviews of the d90 I decided to stump up the extra and go for the d90. There's quite a lot of improvements, better af, much better LCD screen, etc.

I got it with the 18-55 vr lens, although everything I read made me want the 18-105 vr, I decided I couldn't justify the extra money and I didn't need the extra reach. Anyway it came to under £400, so with £450 you could get the d90 and the 18-105 vr, which I believe would be a very decent set of kit. I've been well chuffed with my purchase.

Hi

Not the latest camera I know, but an option I think is worth considering would be a Canon Eos 350D plus the Tamron 17-50mm 2.8. The body is easy to get to grips with and combined with that lens would come well in under your budget. Most importantly, it takes great pictures.:)

If you found you didn't like it you could move both items on without losing too much money, if any at all.
