First DSLR ... what would you take photos of?

Yes
My new camera will hopefully turn up tomorrow, but if not then within a few days. At least, Warehouse Express sent out the "Buy Now Pay Later" forms that I returned last week, so I'm assuming that means they've accepted the request!

The camera is a Canon 40D and I got the 24-105mm lens with it. I'm hoping you guys can suggest things to photograph for me to get me started. Things like sports and landscapes will be tricky because of the lack of telephoto/wide-angle, but my only real idea so far is to head up to Oxford and do some street photography and general snappery.

So ... anyone got any hints? What sort of photos would you go out looking for? Can you think of any good locations/type of locations to go in the South-Oxfordshire area? :)

Te he.
Why don't you do some of those obligatory "self portrait holding your new camera in the mirror" shots...
OK I confess I still do it as soon as I get some new kit. How sad is that?

As for where to go and what to shoot outside. Take a drive with your camera next to you (or if you prefer, get on a bus/train) something will soon turn up. I love it when you have no plans to take shots as your mind is free to wander all over the place.

Look forward to seeing some of your shots.

My mind wanders free all over the place anyway ... I'm not sure encouragement would be a good idea.

I probably will shoot everything, but I guess I'm hoping for some kind of inspiration for somewhere to go where there'll be lots of everything to shoot ;)

That's the kind of advice I'm after. Thanks, Mr. Orb. I shall do so :)

Mr Orbe. Brilliant advice.
Wish I had had that sort of help when I first started !
And, it made me laugh.
Not easy, as we are enduring our first BBQ of the year...

Cheers - must dash, got some fizz to drink and pork to cook...

Everything :D

Shoot everything and see what you enjoy, then develop from there

Can't help on the locations though :(

Yup, took me about 4-6 months of that to really decide what I liked pointing my camera at :).

First shot: inside of lens cap ;)
Second shot: new camera box
Third shot: old photography kit that you no longer need to use
Fourth shot: family pet
Fifth shot: self in mirror
Sixth shot: self in mirror at high ISO and without flash as you were blinded by the fifth shot
Seventh shot: irritated-looking partner
Remaining shots (normally from the next day onwards): glorious photos around your locale...I suggest starting with Hertford College bridge using the wide end of your new lens

:)

If I had a wife, d'you think I'd be getting a brand new Canon 40D and a 24-105 lens? ;)

I did and she has no idea how much I have spent:D
