First DSLR suggestions?

I have a Nikon D3100 which is my 1st dslr and I love it. I actually thought I was going to get a Canon, as a couple of my friends have Canons and I'd have been able to borrow lenses from them etc.

BUT I then went into Jessops to see how the different cameras felt in my hands and walked out with the Nikon. It just felt better in my hands than the Canon.

Best advice ever:thumbs:

As others have said there isn't much difference in performance between the major systems.

However, if you can't get on with the handling of the thing in the first place then this is going to seriously distract you.

For what it's worth, I just didn't get the ergonomics on the Nikon I tried at the time. Horses for courses though, we're all wired up differently.

I can definetly recommend the D3100 too! Felt much nicer and easier to use. I agree with other to go into Jessops and try em all out. The Nikon felt nicer and had a easier to use interface for me.

Plus i accidentally dropped my camera on rocks and it still works perfectly! (i did have to replace the UV filter though!)

There is no perfect DSLR for a beginner.

There is however the best DSLR for you.

Go to the camera shops and try them out.

It is the one that feels most comfortable when you hold it.

It is the one with the menu system you find most intuitive.

It is the one that fits your budget.

All the cameras on the market take good images, it is you however that makes them great.

So to sum up don't buy from the recommendations of others. They like one particular model because it fits their criteria, not necessarily yours.

Hello everyone, first post here for me, maybe should have browsed for this forum before impulse buying my Canon 1100D, dont think i've made too bad a decision after reading some of the feedback, my main objective with this camera is to photograph miniature figures approx 30mm high, so my question is:-
Will the standard issue 18-55mm lens be good enough or will I need to invest in another lens?
Cheers in advance
Alan

You will need either a macro lens or try close up filters usually come in a set but you can get then screw in or slot in Colin style

havent read all the replies, so apologies if this is a repetition of what you have already read.

i was in exactly the same boat as yourself a few weeks ago, and after a bit of my own research and and the outstandingly good help from the folk on here i went for the d3100. i'm not gonna waffle on or anything like that but it is outstanding, and it has a setting where it actually tells you how to take pictures, ok it's basic the advice it gives but it allows you to start 'playing' straight away.

my suggestions is Nikon D90,the lens is 24-105mmAFi have one.it is fantastic , it is my first camera ,i love it and i am still learning lots about it ,it goes with me everywhere ,i have used it outdoors and in studio situations -excellent camera for beginners ..

i am not going to change for any other cameras, but i would like to add lens, because my lens not work well when i photoing tiny staff. can you give me some suggestions?

I haven't read the whole thread so apologies if this has been said before but on an entry level i find the Nikons to be better built and the Canons to have a more intuitive menu system. I'm pretty much comparing the likes of the Canon 1000/1100D to the Nikon D3100.

Once you get past the 1100D to the 550/600D then the build quality goes up a notch.

Some are better for video (550D is good for it, not sure how that compares to the D3100). So if video is important to you then that's going to mean you need to do more homework.

Having worked in a camera shop and played with all the entry level cameras and seen what people buy, i would say you would do well with either the D3100 which is a very solid feeling little camera, or 550D which has good video capabilities and shares a sensor with the Canon 7D, which is why some people call it "the Mini 7D".

Both are excellent DSLRs!

I've just had a quick look and found this video footage from the D3100. Nice! it looks like you do have full-time autofocus, same as on the 550D. Either camera would be a win. Just remember you will probably want some accessories - tripod, camera bag and maybe another lens somewhere down the line ;)
