First DSLR and Lens Help

Hello all,

Im Ben, just starting to get into photography and looking for some help. I started looking at bridge cameras, the Fuji HS10 specifically, Im looking to photography landscapes and motorsport as my two main proprieties.

The HS10 appealed to me because of the zoom which I presume ill need to photographing car on track as im likely to be a fair distance from the action, I soon started looking at budget DSLR, I've read alot on here and appreciate the general consensus is to go and have a try of a few cameras to get a feel for them.

So my main questions would be, am I better off getting a HS10 or a budget DSLR, my key thing about getting a DSLR is I havent got a clue about lens or what I would need for the type of photography I want to do.

For motorpsort most certainly a DSLR. I cant see even the best bridge beeing able to keep up with that.

Need to know a budget really, because you could spend £300 to £3,000.
You'll need around a 300mm lens ideally for motorsport, depending where abouts on the track you are, and you'll want between 18-24mm for landscapes, or maybe wider.

Most kit lenses are 18-55 or 18-70mm and you can buy 70-300 lenses for pretty cheap. If you go Nikon, the 70-300VR is ideal for motorsport, and if you go Canon the 70-200F/4. I think there is a canon 70-300 ish range lens too which might be better.

Cheers, I was looking at something like Sony A390, Canon 1000D 1100D, and then what ever a lens is likely to cost, so maybe £400-500 sound reasonable?

Im not looking to spend the earth but equally I dont want to buy anything thats going to be useless and unsuitable for what I want.

I dont know sony at all so wont even attempt that. You could get a Canon 450D and 70-200 f/4 for bellow £500, or a Nikon D80/D60 or even D40 and 70-300VR. I'd always reccomened going second hand as you'll get so much more for your money. The Canon's you listed are very very basic, and whilst thats not always a bad thing, you could get something much better built with more features for less money. The Canon 1100 has a really poor FPS speed, something like 2fps, which will be near useless for motorsport.

Thanks for the advice, just trying to weigh up all my options now :)

is there a minimum fps rate I should be looking for?

All I can do is see how it goes but the deal was as you say cracking so I guess some things are not as good as other cameras but I got everything I needed at a good price and as it was my wonderful wife who bought it (yes she is in the room lol) it was an even better deal :lol:

Sounds like you got a good'un there fella :)

I think that's roughly the same FPS rate as my old 400D which to be honest, I never found too slow.

It's only since I got my 7D I noticed how much more action I'm able to capture :thumbs::geek: :lol:
 
I bought a 450D, 18-55 lens, 50 mm lens second hand all from the for sale section on this website for around £400 I think (two separate purchases)... I don't have the post count to view my own purchases lol so can't say the exact price.

I have found the purchase to be well worth it, the camera is far better than the point and clicks I used to use, and being able to go manual or run in AP etc is much better. Now I want more lenses!
