Yes
Some of you may have seen my thread about my employer willing to pay for its employees to study 'personal development' classes, if not then see here. Well, after I showed interest in this opportunity to the works training manager, she called me today at work to ask me a question.

Would I be interested in going to the works function party (every year they hold a 'do' in October for people who have been there for 10 years - and this year they are also honouring those who have been there 15 years - for which I am one of....), not only as an invited guest, but to be the official photographer for the night.....

There will be about 26 photos required - one for each 10 or 15 year employee up for 'award', basically a handshake photo as you collect your long service award from the MD.

Up to now I've really kept my work and 'hobby' separate, but it goes to show that a word about an evening course to better yourself can lead to further interest.

All I have to do now is get back to them with a quote and providing it's not 'silly' money  the gig is mine.

Oh and if I wanted to take photos of the guests in a private manner - eg, a work colleague wanted a photo of him and his missus 'dolled' up for the night, then I am free to request a fee from said person (opportunity here for some serious networking and further bookings maybe ;);))

Go for it, but be prepared. Sounds like you will have the Minolta lens to use as you will need a fast lens and the flash.

Keep us posted.

I do simialr stuff for NVQ awards for my local council. I charge for my time to be there and for each print ordered. Usually I'm only there for an hour tops so I charge £75 and then £10 per 6x8 - far from silly money but it works out as quite a good earner. Also sell them on extra shots such as the groups and a large framed print to go in the office reception, etc.

People will ask anyway but don't forget to work the room and sell your services to all and sundry.

Further news on this front, I have again been asked for a quote to take 4 photos again for my employer, this time of our workers committee members for this coming Autumn season. Even if I don't get the gigs then I like the fact that I am getting asked to tender a quote twice now in a month or so.
