Yes
I will start driving in October (God help us).

I dont know what to get for a first car.

Want something under a grand.

Something that is cheap to insure.

Something that it doesnt matter if I wrap it around a tree.

Was thinking MX5 (Hairdresser) but what about insurance?
I quite like the idea of a Fiesta or 106!

Any ideas?

I would go with a 106

Top cars if treated rightly

MX5 would kill you on insurance i would imagine.. convertables and sports cars (and both in this case) cost a fortune for first time drivers

try confused.com and get an idea what kind of car you can afford to insure. I'm afraid to say that you'll probbaly have to get something with a 1 litre engine to be able to get close to affording insurance.

MX-5? You'll be looking at about £5000 insurance, probably more :cuckoo:

Cheap to insure then you'll need to look at something in insurance Group One - VX Corsa 1 litre etc. The difference between a 1 litre Corsa and a 1.2 can be £5-600 at your age......

it might be worth going on your parents insurance as a named driver, you can even earn your own no claims bonus nowadays

i'm not sure, but i reckon its cheaper to have a sex change and then get insured as a woman. the difference in insurance should cover the cost of the operation. you can always get it reversed when you are 40 and have built up a good NCB.

Did a quick quote check, using a low-risk post code round here and you're looking at between £5-6500 to insure a 1991 MX-5, with a £7-800 excess.....

You have to be careful getting a parent to insure a car if you are to be the main driver but pretend it will be, say, your mum. This is known as fronting and can land you in serious trouble....

Go for a Ford Ka.

Loads around for under a grand.

Insurance Group 2.

Dirt cheap to run, cheap parts, and someone on every corner who can service/repair them if needed.

And fitted with an engine that first saw service in the 1960 Anglia 105e

306 D turbo.

Nice car, NOT slow, look the biz, cheap to insure !!

Look for a 's' plate or older !! you cant go wrong !

I'm going to suggest.....

Fiat_126_Bis.jpg

A nice one should be about 200 quid, GP1 insurance, runs on fumes and a total hoot to drive :thumbs::woot:

It might be great pulling up in a flash motor, but the insurance and general running costs will kill you... Even today, I drive a 1995 Peugeot 405 estate - cost me £450 last September, just went through its MOT needing only a light bulb, and stings me £170 a year fully comp. If it gets pranged, no tears:)

Lad I used to work with (18) decided he'd fancy a Corrado. Cost him £3000 for the car, and another £3000 for a years insurance!!! Go for a base-model Corsa, 106, Fiesta etc. and build up your NCB. You'll thank us for the advice in the long run!

What about a Vauxhall Astra or a Citroen ZX?

Having a policy in your own name (which you must do if it's your car) then putting your parents on as named drivers makes the policy slightly cheaper (if your parents haven't crashed or have any driving offences) as the insurance company reckons that when they are driving, you are not hence lowering the 'risk'.

Hope you understood that??????

There is no chance of me going on my dads insurance as he reckons I will bin it

It was just a idea about the MX5, I dont think I wll go down that road.

Like the idea of a 306 but I dont wanna be killed by insurance as its going to cost quite a bit for my photography course (Materials, films, paper etc)

Oh how I dream of a proper mini/proper Beetle/ Old/new Fiat 500 :(

if your in it when you wrap it around a tree ,,believe me ,,,it will matter !

( but i know what you mean )

My first car 3/4 years ago was an X reg 1.0 litre Corsa. Car cost £3500, insurance was £1000 in the first year fully comp. Don't under-estimate what it'll cost you in fuel, servicing, tyres etc etc too.

Exactly, i paid £3500 for my forst car, 3 and a half years ago, got a renault clio, 1.2, group 2 insurance, cost me £3k for the car, and £1400 to insure on my own policy, with the world and his wife as named drivers to drop the premium. That was with an £800 excess too (Ouch).

Servicing came in at £160 at a time, tax £110, and fuel at £25 per week, doing about 8k miles per year.

i'd get something like an old fiesta, or a KA. Or even a 106. Even i can't afford to insure an MX5 atm, and i'm 21, with 3 years NCB and license for 4 years.. :/

get something cheap matt, like a fiesta or something like that, insurance is the big killer for younbg drivers, it costs a fortune!, my first car was a s***brown mini

get something you can insure as third party that should bring the price down.

where is that lad that had a civic typeR that cost him about 20p to insure dispite being 18 and living in cardiff..........:bonk:

My younger sister is currently looking at her first car, I'd recommend doing the Pass Plus program though once you pass your driving test. Makes a considerable difference to the insurance on your first car.

My sister is currently looking at 106's, Fiestas and Ka's for her first car because insurance is just a joke on anything bigger. Even a 1.1 106 can easily cost you £1100 at cheapest insurance. I think even a 306 will be difficult to insure.

Don't even think about the MX5 route for another 4 years, my mate has just got his 3rd years no claims and he's 21. Only now can he afford the insurance on one.

My first car was a Citroen AX 1.1. Cost me £800 and the same to insure it when i was 17..

I had it for about 1 month, drove past a citroen garage and fell in love with a Saxo VTR.

Off to the bank i went to get a Loan and £6000 later she was mine. £900 to insure.

Awesome handling and probably the quickest car you can get for the insurance group 7.

and you can get VTR's now for under a grand...

On the thing of Pass Plus my wife did it. She's 24 and i have done her insurance since we got together 6 year ago and no one has asked/given discount for the Pass Pluss scheme yet...ended up just costing her more money in lessons. I think that insurers are wise enough to know that doing a bit of motorway driving in the dark is not going to stop you smashing up your Bentley Continental :-)

On the pass plus thing, I would definately recommend new drivers do it for the experience over anything else. I did and it taught me a few extra things which is always handy. I then just phoned up the insurer and they knocked off almost exactly what I paid for the lessons so I was no worse off. Whether its made any difference since then I don't know, but was worth it for the extra tuition.

^^ Mini's not such a bad idea !!

Great little car, easy to fix, heaps of fun !!

AND cheap to insure !!

AND you wont look a tw@ like all the other idiots in kev'd up Saxo's etc

Well proven technology then even though I suspect the engine won't be quite the same as the 1960 variant.

A car under a grand is fine, but anything with XSDTi type lettering after the model is likely to cost you well over a grand to insure. If you can afford it, go for it, otherwise go for something sensible. Check the likes of What Car for prices reviews and insurance bands http://www.whatcar.co.uk/

Saxo's were not like that when i was 17 (9 year ago)

As cars come down in price most cars get the Chav treatment.

I hear ya fella. But they ARE now, and there isn't a driver on the road I despise more than a kev'd up Saxo driver.

Other than old people....

My first car is a 1997 Corsa Sport, it was about £380.

If you want to pick up and nice and cheap car, it might be worth going to a car auction. That's where I got mine from.

Although, there's a few insurance companies that won't insure me because the car says "Sport" on the side (ridiculous!)

After you pass your test, your insurance will likely double. I'm with Quinn, and it's costing me £1,400 to insure the car.
I inquired about pass plus and they would only give £40 discount, which is rubbish, as there are some companies that will knock off 30-40% if you do pass plus

I got a nice £170 discount when i phoned up norwich union and said i had pass plus.

It's worth phoning up, and asking about these things. You'll find that they're more than happy to knock the price down if they know they're going to get a sale.
