First car might be a Ford Ka, oh dear...

All right, but apart from the free windscreen cover, tax disc holders, cuddly toys, monthly payments, no claims bonus, complementary car and free pen, what have the insurance companies ever done for us?
 
Insurance tends to go up if you're a very naughty boy (or girl) though

What makes you say that? The older 1.3 has no overhead cam and thus no timing belt/chain to go, as the cams are operated by pushrods. It's rattly but renowned for being robust, and a lot of the older Fords still on the road today are driven by that same engine.

It's possibly the most unexciting, slow, lifeless engine made.
 
As is the naturally aspirated Peugeot/Citroen XUD 1.9 litre diesel, but there's one in a Citroen ZX out in the yard here with quarter of a million miles on it that still goes, which is the important thing.

I find longevity of an engine to be more of an important point than how fast you can drive up someone's arse in the fast lane (yes, X5 drivers, I am talking to you) but then, that's just me.

It's irrelevant to the OP now anyway.

I never found any of my ford Ka's to be particularly slow or lifeless (as per previous posts I owned 2 and had access to another 3) , all were 1.3 although that said if you are looking for an exciting pulse racing driving experience you don't buy a ford ka or worry about cheap insurance

the 1.25 isn't exactly a ferrari diablo either

I was a journalist (still am, kind of) since 2001 and I was told that journalists, especially editors (even office-based ones) are a high risk. Not sure why...

Maybe stems back to the time when many a journo spent every lunch time in the pub.
 
I've got a Ka, god I really shouldn't start my first post on a forum in that way, anyway.... Back to point, it's an 06, 1.3. Nothing particularly special. That said, it's also my first car, also due to insurance, and frankly having not experienced much else, there's nothing wrong with it as an a to b car, or on motorways.

Also, it can be a good laugh. You have to get to about 3,500 revs until any acceleration kicks in to be fair, but the suspension is both atrocious and fantastic. To be fair. It is dire. I really mean that. Awful. It's so so soft. But that means go around a corner at 60 and you have some great fun as the suspension suffers. It can create some great moments, and that, with the noise from the engine means you often feel like you're going faster than you are!
