Hi,

I'm after some advice, I'm looking to get into photography and Id like some advice on the basics.

The camera I'm currently looking at is the following: Canon 550D, 600D and 60D I don't think my budget can go to the 7D.

The pictures I'll be mostly taking is landscapes, waterfalls and wildlife and some motorsport events ie. F1 and superbikes.

is the 60D worth the extra £130+ price tag over the 600D? I'd like to know your reviews on these camera and any help would be great!

I have the 60D and played with the 7D and 600D
just from a handling point of view I liked the 60D and the 7D better than the 600d - just fitted my hand better
but the £350 extra for the 7D on top of the 60D was out of my price range really (in fact it all was to be truthful)

I was told the 7D had a better body and also much better for focusing on action photography

so that maybe something to consider for F1 and superbikes
what glass do you have or do you intend to buy
for F1 and superbikes that will need to be long lenses , for on track i suspect

also the 600D did not have a top LCD screen and I like to have that information available on my cameras (old film cameras EOS5)
so that made the choice easier

the 600d has a pentamirror and the 60D a penta prism and i noticed a difference when using the viewfinder

also the 60d is quoted as water resistant and the 600d is not - not that i think its water proof in any way

Also the 650D is expected out any day now - and that may see a price change on the 60D

You should go to the shops and handle a variety of brands.

Then buy the camera that

Fits your budget

You find most comfortable to hold, after all you will be the one holding it not us. Cameras come in different sizes and so do our hands.

It will be the camera with a control layout and menus you find most intuitive.

Remember all the cameras will take good pictures, it is you however that will make them great.

What is your budget? Do you know what lenses you need and how much they cost?

For wildlife you are going to need at least a 400mm lens preferably a 500, is that included in your budget. I would say buy the best that you can afford, perhaps consider secondhand when you could get more for your money, the 7D is an awesome camera, and best of budget long lenses is Sigma 150-500. This was with that combo at Silverstone.

Hi,

Thanks for all your comments!

to be honest with you the weight of the camera isn't an issue for me so not really too worried about that part.

at the moment I'm using my dads canon EOS 30D with a canon ef 90-300mm to take photos with f1 and superbikes which I do like the camera with the extra battery pack it's very heavy :).

my budget is up-to £1,000

My advice after trying out different camera bodies is to buy 2nd hand either from the forums, or specialist dealers like mpb photographic, park camera's, camtech, ffordes, mifsuds, digital depot etc, you'll get more for your £££

An alternative is canon outlet on ebay, they deal in refurbished canon gear.

Motorsport/wildlife to landscapes will kill you budget, especially on the lenses.
Perhaps, rather than trying to buy everything now, a camera body and decent long'ish zoom would be the best option, perhaps see if you can get the kit lens (not too expensive) and upgrade that later

Canon 30/40D and sigma 150-500mm (although not ideal for motorsport - too slow) would get you a lens for wildlife and would meet your budget

After looking up the reviews, I'm going to buy for the canon 7D.

there's a few on ebay for £480 - £1,000 with lens.

I could even hold off for a month and get the lens next month and just the camera this month, I think if I was to go for the 600d I would regret it.

Is that with a kit lens? i dont think i would go for the kit lens if so. Try and get a camera "body only" and then go for the right lens for you, although you might already be doing that looking at the price you just quoted above.

not sure where abouts you are but london camera exchange also do 2nd hand and excellent customer service - 6mths guarantee and as you are Face 2 face easy to sort out issue , I purchased a 2nd hand 60d only been out 3 weeks and had 140 shots on the shutter http://eoscount.com/
and due to a problem shop refunded the money with no issues

also had discussions with mpb photographic and they appear to be good , but no experience

NOT so much the weight as the balance and how it feels in the hand + lens + weight , i would not buy a camera without holding it

I'm a canon fan - but any reason you are not considering Nikon at all ?

Thanks for your feedback, I'm from Bath nr Bristol.

I've just one question buying a 2nd hand camera, for a canon 7D there's 2nd hand ones which shutter shots of 4,500 to 15,000 what's classed as a high usage and should I ignore the 7d over a certain number or does it not really matter?

Not sure of the spec of that camera shutter the 60D is 100,000 actuations
i think the 7D is 150,000

bristol cameras used to be good on price - although maybe not now - I usually compare to warehouseexpress (wex now)
http://www.bristolcameras.co.uk/c-used-camera-equipment.htm
and do used

and london camera exchange in bath and bristol and I cannot speak highly enough of the branch in guildford
they usually work out about £100 cheaper than new for current available equipment 2nd hand
so you may get new at wex for £50-60 more
