First camera: Fuji S6500fd or Fuji S7000? (now maybe the S8000FD or S9600 too!)

Hi everyone,

First of all, I'm new to the forum, so "HI!"

I'm looking to buy a camera to get me started in the Photography field. I was looking at the Fuji S6500fd and the S7000. What are your opinions on these? Which is better? Are they good for starting out? I would like a camera which I can use for taking good pictures, while learning all of the features that the camera has to offer.

Any advice and help is much appreciated!

Regards,
Steven

Hi, welcome to the forum! :)

The S7000 is quite an old model. I had the sister model, the S5500. Excellent camera for starting out and getting to know the basic steps to SLR.

The 6*00 range is the one to go for, as a mid-range camera. The 9*00 is available if you're willing to spend an extra £100 or so.

If you really want to get stuck into it, a Nikon D40x or Canon 400d are the basic DSLR cameras. With a kit lens you're looking at a further £100ish, but then it's the slippery yet fun slope to DSLRdom! :D

Get the 6500, its got everything you need to get started. outgrow that first before going the dslr route.

I would love to get a DSLR such as the Nikon D40x or Canon 400d, but as I'm a poor student, a cheaper model will do me for now and to get started.

You both seem to like the 6500 better, I think it's a much nicer looking camera, but I don't have any experience with either of them.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, keep the advice coming please :)

The 6500 would be a great camera. I still have the older sister, the 5500. I don't use it anymore but the range is a perfect in-between camera.

I still have and now my daughter uses a s7000 I was pleased with the results and it is easy to handle.
heres one of many shots that I took with it.

That's not bad, thanks for that. I think I would prefer a slightly newer model, such as the S6500fd or S7000? I'm just not sure which is better :shake:

Has the picture been photoshopped at all? It looks almost fake. Very nice.

Keep the advice coming please.

Only adjusted levels. Taken at the eden project with onboard flash.

and another one trying out the macro facility one morning on the way to work so it was a quick grab shot.

The S7000 is a very old model! The 5*00, 6*00 and 9*00 are the current range.

Sorry, i do not mean to highjack the thread, but I thought that I would post a couple more photos taken with my s7000, only slight adjustment of levels.

Just because it is old does not mean that it isn't a capable camera.

Dave, you're not hijacking my thread. If anything, you're helping me! Thanks :)

Those pictures look great! I really like the colours in the first and second image, the third one is also good.

I have been told that the S7000 is a very good camera, but I've also been told the S6500fd is a great camera. I made this thread hoping that you guys will be able to convince me one is better (if possible), than the other. I want to make sure I buy the right one.

If anyone wants to post pictures taken with either of the cameras - preferably unedited - then that would be a huge help.

I understand that the S6500fd has a better and bigger zoom (28-300mm) which would be a great all round lens! I believe it also has more ISO settings. Both of these factors are making me sway towards the S6500fd.

No problem Steven, If you are local to me you are welcome to have a go with the s7000, I am between Bournemouth and Southampton

I'm from Scotland, so it would be a bit of a trek. Thanks for the offer though, and for all your help!

New Milton? That's a complete guess, by the way! Hedge End Jessops is good for testing out specialist equipment! :)

Do I know you? you are spot on, how did you know?

LOL! We have no link. I live in Sussex, and regularly in Soton and B'mouth. Whenever someone says to me they live in-between, that's the only place of any significance.

will have to meet up sometime when you are in the area if you are interested.

My only input here would be to suggest that when you try the cameras out, make sure you try shooting moving subjects if that type of subject is likely to interest you.

I have a well outdated Finepix s5000, which is a good camera except for the huge delay between pressing the shutter and the image capture.

I've switched to a Pentax K100d dslr, partly to get pictures when I press the shutter button (and partly because I have some old but good K mount lenses I can use on it).

If your budgets around £200, then Asda have the K100d @ £229(get them to scan bar code) and Currys were doing the K110d @£199. Both with 18-55 lens. Well worth a look see, if you do manage to find one though you'll have the dreaded urge to buy extre lens. Currys recently had the 50-200 Samsung(Pentax) @ £30 but highly unlikely to be in stock anywhere.

Steve,

I know you've now widened your field of prospective new cameras, but going back to the Fujifilm S6500fd - I've just bought one and it's superb!

It was too good a deal to refuse. £139.95 delivered!

and no, I don't have anything to do with them, it's just that it's a fantastic camera at a great price. I ordered it late at night on Wednesday and it arrived first thing Friday.

You could certainly do a lot worse.

For what it's worth Steven I think you've made the right choice. If nothing else you've opted for a dSLR and that's got to be a step in the right direction regardless of where it sits in the market. Nothing against the Fuji range (I have the S9600 myself) but it just doesn't have the flexiblity of a dSLR.

I think I have as well. They're more flexible than the bridge cameras. I also bought it second hand, so there's not much difference in price between the two!
