This is my first attempt at Portrait.
I have only been into photography for 6 months and am still very much a beginner!:)

Any thoughts would be much appreciated (good and bad) as i believe you only learn by your mistakes,

So here goes!

The angle of the first photo is... not exactly complementary. A lot of overheads seem to be, so don't sweat it too much. The second isn't bad, but the framing could be a bit wider for my taste. Get a bit of background in there even if its a plain white. Adds a bit of context and doesn't feel so much like your face is being pushed into theirs. Unless you are going for that I guess!

Lighting seems pretty average, not bad but not brilliant either. Maybe a diffuser/reflector just to soften the light a little on the first one, and you won't get that flash reflecting off the lower lip. For the second one, if you move your key light off to the side you will get a bit more depth to the face, as it looks a bit flat with that head on lighting. Are you using the on camera flash or an external on the body? If you use your on camera flash on a low setting for a bit of fill and use that to trigger a second cheap flash off to the side as your key light you will get much nicer lighting. Even better if you can trigger the off cam via sync lead or wirelessly.

Keep on though!

I quite like the first one in b&w but I also think the framing is a bit tight in the second one.

I agree with Jamtea regarding softer light for the first shot. Also the hand looks a little odd in the shot. Still six months into photography they aren't bad efforts. Keep trying and practising.
