Here is my first attempt at developing at home.

Ilford HP5 developed ID-11 1+1 for 13 mins. I was a bit apprehensive before starting but really enjoyed the whole process! :)

I would welcome any advice or tips and please feel free to comment or critique.

These were all taken on a Canon EOS 300 with a EF 20mm prime lens which I borrowed. I could only keep the lens for a couple of hours so the whole roll was shot in an extended lunch hour around Liverpool.

Nice shots, definitely looks like a success - how many times did you swear during the loading on the reel? Any less than 250 and that's a definite success.

(for the record, mine counts as a failure under that criteria)

Haha, despite having a 2 hour practice seesion the night before on an old film the pressure still got to me, it started allright then seemed to get stuck!
 
Like the pics you have posted in "show us yer film shots" , these are also very good, especially for a first dev attempt....keep u the good work!
 
Yeah, definitely a successful first attempt, Russell.
Looking at those pics, I think I'm gonna have to give ID11 a bash

Hey I don't want to sound annoying but my first time developing the reel wasn't annoying at all! I even did 120 next time and it was just fine.

Magic reels?

Also I really like the shots. The escalators are my fav, developing clearly went really well :)

Thanks guys, I was actually surprised and how fine the grain is! Think I will get some FP4 for a play.

I'm going to have to make the jump and dot it.
Costco is the only one left close to me and its pretty bad.
Just want to be sure iI'm buying the right stuff.
I know i should try to find it out by myself but could you give me the exact name for developer, fixer etc.. your using.
 
Wonderful set of photographs and for the first run at home developing it is superb, great subjects and very good tones without that high contrast look.

Very impressive indeed. You will have to buy yourself a 20mm now. :)

Superb work I love them

I dont recall loading film being that diffcult but its long time ago but I was taught by great guy.

Unfortunately I have had to teach myself which is okay but you miss out on the little tricks that experience brings.
 
All ordered and should arrived this week with my developing kit.
I also downloaded the app on my iphone.
I will keep you informed of my progress :-)
 
Just mixed the ID11 developer and i'm going to do my first roll of HP5 400 tonight.
Do i use stock or 1.1 developer to save times?
 
I tend to err on the side of using the lower strengths with longer times with rodinal, but that's because I'm a skinflint :lol:
 
Either, 1+1 is used one shot with slightly longer development times or use it at stock strength and you can reuse it, but remember to extend any subsequent times by illfords recommendations.

Does the different strength affect the final result?
 
Just developed my first roll of film and is drying, looking good but will only really know when i scan them.
Found the process very straight forward, the only thing who made me panic a bit is a tiny bit of liquid coming out of the tank during agitation.

Excellent, I was exactly the same, but once you see them drying, its like your firstborn again!:lol:
 
I cant remember if you said already, what scanner have you got?

I think they're fine mate, the grain is fabulous, especially given its hp5 (my hp5 comes out grainier than badly mixed porridge) they're nicely exposed.

All in all, I'd say its a successful first effort for developing yourself, well done mate :)

Thank you very much, I have a Epson V370 but I keep fiddling with the setting in vuescan ,not sure if I should applied the sharpening in vuescan or after.
 
Looking good - with regards to the sharpening apply it after as Vuescans sharpening option is way too aggressive in my opinion and distinctly over-sharpens scans.

Ah, I've got the v330. I would recommend giving the epson scan software a bash, I find it surprisingly good

I have been going from vuescan to epson scan, i find epson scan more straight forward.
Just received a new Nikon F100 today and I'm going to do a couple of roll with it.:)
